Sydney bus company wants Doris, not Boris, behind the wheel

17/05/2008 6:06:00 PM.  | James Cregan
The managing director of a Sydney bus company has welcomed the State Government's decision to allow it to advertise exclusively for female bus drivers.

Morris Caputi from Veolia Transport said women drivers tend to be gentler on buses and could relate better to passengers.

He said women should not be intimidated to get behind the wheel.

“what we’re trying to show them (women) is that it’s not that difficult to drive a bus, and this is why we got the exemption,” Mr Caputi said.

When it's men it's discrimination, but when it's women it's business.

The one that put the bus over the edge at Epping Station was pretty gentle. Pity about the bus though.

It is a double standard, but i do know some bus drivers who are male who are aggressive in ways that females generally are not. Work tends to bend a person to fit it. I have seen a female bus driver with a New York accent get very aggressive with a pedestrian. Still, if a few women get work that way, no harm done.

I would certainly be nervous riding on a bus knowing that the state government had allowed the law to be changed to allow inferior women drivers as against the hiring of more experienced bus drivers, be them either male or female.Actually it is rather demeaning of the women to be hired this way. Yet you must wonder the motives of the bus company, --cheaper insurance, wages or what?
