Thornely in the wickets in IPL

17/05/2008 12:38:00 PM.  |
NSW allrounder Dominic Thornely had the handsome return of 2-7 off three overs today as Mumbai Indians rolled Kolkata Knight Riders for 67 - the lowest score in the Indian Premier League's brief history.

Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya took care of Mumbai's simple chase, smashing an unbeaten 48 off 17 balls as the hosts strolled to victory with eight wickets and 87 balls to spare at Wankhede Stadium.

"I'm very happy, obviously," said Thornely, who claimed the scalps of Kolkata captain and hero Sourav Ganguly for 15 and teenage pace star Ishant Sharma for four.

"The wicket was a little bit difficult ... the ball was moving around a fair bit with a bit of bounce," added the 29-year-old.

South African medium-pacer Shaun Pollock did the early damage for Mumbai after captain Sachin Tendulkar won the toss and elected to bowl in the unusually seam-friendly conditions for a Twenty20 match.

Pollock took 3-12 off four overs, including the key wicket of Victoria's David Hussey caught behind for two.

West Indies' Dwayne Bravo and little-known Indian Rohan Raje also picked up two wickets each as the Knight Riders were bundled out in 15.2 overs.

There was an early scare for Mumbai in reply when controversial Pakistani speedster Shoaib Akhtar dismissed Tendulkar for a duck after earlier having Jayasuriya dropped at slip.

But any concern was short-lived.

Akhtar finished with 1-29 off just two overs and Sharma 1-29 off 2.3 as Jayasuriya backed up his 48-ball 114 two days ago with another incredible knock as Mumbai surpassed the target at 2-68 off 5.3 overs.

It was the most convincing win for any team in the lucrative tournament to date, boosting Mumbai's chances of making the semi-finals.

Tendulkar's men are now in fourth-place on the table and boast the best net run-rate, while Kolkata sit sixth of the eight franchises.
