It is hoped the federal government will approve the trial of a cannabis-based drug to help people suffering from cancer, multiple-sclerosis and AIDS.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration will be asked to allow the importation of the UK drug Sativex, which delivers cannabis compounds through an oral spray.
New South Wales Justice Minister John Hatzistergos says while the state government does not support the legalisation of marijuana, it backs medical trials.
"For any person who has a loved one or a friend who is suffering from serious injury or death the potential to be able to relieve the pain through the use of products such as this would certainly be welcome."
