Motoring groups say the costs for commuters travelling from Sydney’s outer suburbs to work in the city now comprise one-third of the average weekly wage.
Along with the ever rising cost of petrol, when insurance, maintenance and registration are factored in, an average commuter from Penrith in the west spends more than $330 a week.
NRMA Director Gary Punch says it's even more expensive in other areas.
“For people driving in from Campbelltown it’s costing $342 - $360 a week.”
“Now we know that motorists that drive on motorways use up to 40 per cent less fuel.”
