Returned fugitive Tony Mokbel will appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday after spending his first night in an Australian jail since fleeing the country two years ago.
Mokbel, 42, returned to Melbourne on Saturday from Athens in a specially chartered private aircraft, amid tight security.
His arrival at Tullamarine surprised journalists who had expected him to land at either Avalon Airport or the Point Cook air force base, both of which are near Barwon Prison.
It's believed the choice of Tullamarine was made when the aircraft was just 15 minutes away.
From Tullamarine, he was whisked away in a police helicopter to the maximum security Barwon Prison near Geelong, where he appeared in an out of sessions court hearing.
Because of security concerns it is expected Mokbel's appearance on Tuesday will be by video link from the jail.
His cellmates at Barwon include fellow underworld boss Carl Williams, who is serving 35 years for three gangland murders.
His seven-month legal bid in Greece to avoid extradition finally failed when the Greek government last week signed the order to send him back to Australia.
