The most violent pubs and clubs in New South Wales have been ordered to show why they should not be shut down.

The NSW Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing is ramping up its compliance operations and has given the 23 most violent venues across the state two weeks to show why they should remain open.

News Limited says the venues identified as the most violent by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research have been ordered to provide CCTV footage from the past 30 days, documents relating to violent incidents details of action taken to prevent violence and trading information.

Minister for Gaming and Racing Graham West says it's part of a broader plan to improve safety at licensed venues.

“We want to look at what procedures they’ve got in place to keep the venues safe and how those are working.

“We’re going to compare it to incident reports and get a clear picture of what’s happening at those venues so that we can improve the safety.

Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione says it's time to get tough on pubs.

“I think the community is at the point where they’ve just about had enough of alcohol and the violence that they are having to deal with in their streets – in their own neighbourhoods – when they see people that are out there drunk and fighting.”

“Enough is enough,” he said.

My mother works at a close by RSL and the bouncers there can't physically remove people from the premises in fear of being sued. Bouncers need to be able to remove people before they start throwing stools without fear of it coming back to bite them. Closing the pubs will cause these drunkards to move to another pub and until they stop this silly suing over everything there isn't much you can do. They can sue you for serving them too much alcohol and they can sue you for not serving them.

The bouncers are most of the problem

It has very little to do with the bouncers. It has entirely to do with 1) A national culture of drinking to excess and 2) Licensed premises allowing that culture to continue. It is time that responsible service of alcohol became more than a revenue raiser for the Department of Gaming and Racing through RSA courses and actually was enforced on premises. Like all capatalistic adventures, Licensee's are there to make money with little to no regard for the human consequences.

Sounds like the businesses need to be compensated for having to move. Clearly there has been a failure of planning and zoning. Reminds me of that kerfuffle involving kickbacks from developers to ALP in a local council somewhere (everywhere?). I don't think the ALP planned to be in office a long time, and so they probably expected that they could blame their planning failures on an incoming Liberal administration. They must feel disappointed.

Why is it that Governments only seem to take corrective action when a problem is receiving publicity? The problems of drunken violence and misbehaviour are as old as the hills and there are several laws in place to deal with these issues. The problem is that the laws are not properly enforced and the Government must bear the responsibility for that
