Court battle casts doubt over thousands of fines

20/05/2008 7:41:00 PM.  |
A court battle between a Sydney driver and the Roads and Traffic Authority has cast doubt over tens of thousands speeding fines.

Following a lengthy court battle Bill Aston successfully proved to a magistrate at Sutherland local court speed zone signs in Beverley Hills in Sydney's south could not be clearly seen from the road last year.

In the six weeks it took to put up more prominent signs indicating motorists were entering a school zone, around 31,000 drivers were also caught speeding.

Mr Aston's fine has now been overturned and his points reinstated.

Lawyer Dennis Moralis, who led a successful class action on behalf of thousands of drivers on the same stretch of road, says this should not keep happening.

But Adam Berry from the RTA says motorists in a similar position should not be rushing out to get a lawyer.

"There's no wider implication for any speed camera infringement."
