Tension for Turnbull as email overshadows budget reply

21/05/2008 8:54:00 AM.  | Yoni Bashan
There is more pressure building over the Liberal party today, as the Shadow Treasurer prepares to deliver his budget reply speech.

Malcolm Turnbull will give the traditional address at the National Press Club around midday.

And while he'll be taking aim at the tax cuts and spending measures in last week's budget, he'll also be fending off the latest scandal plaguing his own party.

A leaked email to his leader Brendan Nelson reveals he was against the Coalition's promise to cut fuel excise by five cents.

He's now endorsing the policy, and denies passing on the conversation.

The news has rocked the Liberal leadership and Labor's attacked both men saying they've ‘lost the plot’.

of course ot would overshadow the budget reply. the wiggles would overshadow nelsons budget reply. it was the same as labor ideologies, simply rhetoric.

The Libs are a joke. How do they expect to run a country of 20million people with this sort of in-party conflict going on?

A Khan, a correction for you: it is labor and not liberal that is running the country. Labor is in driver seat so whatever happens internally in liberal party will not have any direct bearing on the nation, as libs are no longer in power.

WO, Very true. But if we do not have strong Opposition to the Governing party, we as Australians will be worse off. We need strong debate in Parliament, not acting like children fighting over who said what. Politics, as most people are aware, is becoming more of a farce everyday.

David, I agree that liberal leadership needs a bit of work. However for labor to comment and paying attention to these matters will not help themselves in solving more pressing issues of escalating living costs. That's my point. I am not saying there is no issue within the liberal party but they will sort themselves in their own timeframe, not Rudd's or someone elses, for that matter.

Khan...the same way as Labor "expected to" while the Beasley/Rudd infighting was going on! Get a sense of reality, fool. They will have their act in good order before 2010.

The labors are a joke. With so much angst and anger out there with rising living costs and dissatisfaction in the recent budget they still choose to concentrate on INTERNAL Liberal affairs. Sounds like another ploy to divert people's attention in order to hide their own incompetence. Remember: CONCENTRATING ON LIBERAL AFFAIRS WILL NOT LOWER PETROL / GROCERY / INFLATION / INTEREST RATE!

WO:Libs now remind me of Labor/Beasely one step forward then two steps back! They keep shooting themselves in the foot and can't keep out of the media and are actually helping Labor. They need to pick a new Leader A.S.A.P.,My preference would be Hockey.

Gazza, welcome back! Sure I agree the lib leadership needs a bit of work. My point is that it will come in their own time. In the meantime attention should be directed to the current labor govt who is running the country.

W.O I take interest in the comments you made quote: "It is labor that is now in power and they have to deal with the rising cost of living, not liberal! So your comments about whether lib can or will do anything about it is irrelevant" unquote. So why would Nelson stick his two bobs worth in then, if this be the case Nelson should just slither back to whence he came, his budget reply speech was nothing more then a media grab, fifteen minutes of much needed fame.

Sean, Nelson is simply offering an alternative policy (which is a role of the opposition) to Swan's silly "Fuelwatch". He has no power to implement it - labor has. Hence I can't see any inconsistency in my comments.

WO. It's interesting how Ambrose likens Nelson's budget reply to Rudd's election speeches... "his budget reply speech was nothing more then a media grab". I think it will all come back to haunt Rudd, and the lefties don't like it when the Liberals play the same game! As Turnbull said in his presentation to the Press Club today, "Rudd is obsessed with answering his own questions!". By the way, Turnbull did very well...might be a future leader there!

WO,Bolts &Co.I have been watching from the sidelines with interest lately. That odd ball character annoyed me commenting on everything.Keating,Ambrose & Co have been keeping you all honest.Rudd is doing okay by me but Libs need to pick up their game if they want the heat put on Rudd. The longer they leave Leadership issue the worse off they will be.Turnbull doesn't pass muster with me,not a team player.Bishop isn't ready.

Why is the press so interested in the Liberal party? Who cares for now what they are fighting about, they are NOT running the country! Lets start putting some pressure on the Labor party, the budget has so many nasty little features that have just been able to slip by that need media attention. Cuts to community projects that have been left half and three qtrs finished, cuts to solar panel rebate. These things affect working families not inhouse Lib bickering. Stop giving Rudd & co a free ride.

Perhaps, Jennifer, it's because bloodletting is of more interest to the punters than incessant budget analysis.

In reply to the A Karn and Shane L. who obviously are great Labor supporters. The Iemma Labor wasted $95 million on advertising. which is more than McDonalds, The Commonwealth Bank, QANTAS and Ford spend on their adverts. The cost is a 19% increase on 2006. This money could be better spent on more beds for hospital, school buildings and other projects which require urgent attention, but is sadly neglected. At a federal level under Kevin Rudd we have a March quarter of CPI figures of 4.2% annualised. For a March quarter of 1.3% you would have to go back 13 years to find the equivalent rise in the CPI. In other words, since the Rudd government have been in power over the last six months, the cost of living has skyrocketed beyond all expectations, and the increase has happened on his watch. How valid was that speech that Kevin Rudd made last year. As with other promises, they are all hollow. No substance.

W.O If the Liberal Party had their way we would all be working for less because of their wretched 'workchoices' legislation. Honestly, do you think they have found the road to Damascus and care about the rising costs of living?

Posted by: Sean Ambrose, Helensburgh

Wednesday, 21 May 2008

Ambrose (welcome back!). All the data shows that the Labor anti Work Choices campaign was based on lies (incl the “Nurse, nurse” campaign which was in fact a State issue!). ABS data (and declining union membership both show that employees were better off under the previous IR regime. But to add hypocrisy to injury (!) AWA’s have now been replaced with IWC’s. You really got sucked in! Anyway, we'll wait another 2.5 years to fix everything up (again!)

Sean, again you are making speculative comments. It is labor that is now in power and they have to deal with the rising cost of living, not liberal! So your comments about whether lib can or will do anything about it is irrelevant. At the very least the costs of living all have gone up significantly since Rudd took over and he has so far to fail to even produce a plan to counteract it. Fact!

Sean it was the liberal party that cleared up YOUR WATERFRONT. It’s YOUR LABOR PARTY that is selling of the farm in NSW. Its YOUR LABOR party that has failed to deliver on infrastructure in NSW. And it’s YOUR LABOR PARTY that ignored the pensioners, carers, and stay at home mums in the last budget. It’s your Labor Party that delivered the 4.2% CPI, the highest in 13 years. You have so much to be proud of Sean.

Phillip Motbey, What a dreary picture you paint. You really need start utilising pastels. Are you feeling suicidal? You speak of infrastructure? Don't insult me. Half of the 'portainer cranes' on our nations waterfront were purchased second hand in 1967 and are now obsolete. As for productivity? You have to be joking. Howard never declared his method of calculation for declaring the waterfront was unproductive and when citing box rates never accepted that two twenty foot boxes lifted simultaneously is categorised as two lifts, as is a forty foot box but of course they now like to assert that they fixed the waterfront. As for CPI and all the other crap you 'topshelf tories' continually spruik as if you are the elite of economic management. If Howard was re-elected 'interest rates' would be higher because of his inflationary policies, not withstanding fact that Mr. Costello deliberately ignored warnings from the Reserve Bank.

Posted by: Sean Ambrose, Helensburgh

Wednesday, 21 May 2008

Sean, you seem to be living in fantasy land. "If Howard was reelected interest rate,...." Who cares, and how will you know what Howard or Costello would have done anyway? Go and get some perspective and realise that labor is now in power. Don't shift the blame to the previous govt by some speculative comments simply because your master Rudd has no idea how to counteract the current mass! He promised & he failed to deliver - so he is a liar. Period.

Phillip Motbey, What a realistic picture you paint. Thank you - we all know (more objectively) about the waterfront than one who was part of the problem.

When it comes time to take lead and put in the hard yards the Liberal Party abscond and slither away from all responsibility. I said it before and I say it again "Howard and Cohorts threw the election". Unfortunately 'topshelf tories' are still under the illusion that we are living in a penal colony and not part of a global community and international economy. Personally, I would not shed a tear or lose any sleep if 75% of our nations entire parliamentarians were frog marched to the brick wall.

Posted by: Sean Ambrose, Helensburgh

Wednesday, 21 May 2008

SA:I agree with the 75% being frogg-marched to a brick wall however this would predominantly involve the labor party politicians.By the way that's how the parliamentarians in this state deal with "honest public servants" forced to undergo psyhiatric testing by HealthQuest. Are you aware of that? The UNION deserted them.Do you know why the UNIONS abandon these workers.Isn't it the "moto" of the Labor Party to look after their own? so what happened to Gillian Sneddon? Can you enlighten everyone.

Gazza Rowe, Joe Hockey would make an ideal leader of the parliamentary Liberal Party, a fat turd in a fancy suit. He reminds me of the kind of man you would expect to encounter in the desert with a couple of Camels pulling a wagon while he peddles snake oil, gypsy tears and warns fellow travelers of their misfortunes with tarot cards. It must be painstaking for Turdbull another spineless toad that lacks courage!
