Hicks family denies $1 million offer

22/05/2008 5:00:00 PM.  |

David Hicks' family and lawyer say they know nothing of a reported $1 million offer to the former Guantanamo Bay detainee to tell his story.

The Nine Network's 60 Minutes program has put $1 million on the table for an exclusive interview with the convicted terrorism supporter, News Limited reported today.

But Mr Hicks' father, Terry, and the lawyer handling his media offers, David McLeod, say it is news to them.

"If they have I want $990 thousand," Terry Hicks quipped.

"But no, I haven't heard anything," he added.

"David hasn't heard anything and David McLeod, who should be the one taking all the offers, I don't think he knows either.

"I do notice Channel Nine are denying it."

Mr McLeod reiterated his client still had not considered telling his story and may never do so.

"He's trying to assimilate back into normal society," Mr McLeod said.

"He's got a voluntary job and he's back with his family. He's not drawing attention to himself and this is the life he wants to lead.

Mr Hicks was still subject to a control order until December and didn't want to draw attention to himself, Mr McLeod said.

"He can understand the public is interested in his story but feels he can't bring his mind to it at the moment."
