UN chief in Burma to focus on saving lives

22/05/2008 12:39:00 PM.  |
UN chief Ban Ki-Moon flies into Burma later today, saying the focus now is on saving lives.

It's taken nearly three weeks for the military government to give approval for the first foreign helicopters to distribute aid to cyclone victims in the Irrawaddy Delta.

And the UN secretary-general says relief workers have so far been able to reach only a quarter of the estimated 2.4 million people in desperate need.

ASEAN says the junta wants more than 11 billion dollars in aid, but first it'll have to let in international teams to verify the damage caused by the cyclone that left nearly 134 thousand dead or missing.
