News channel Fox News has come under fire in the US for featuring a guest who jokingly called for the assassination of probable Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama.

Former New York bureau chief of the Washington Times Liz Trotta referred to the Illinois senator as Osama, before quipping that it would be nice if they both got “knocked-off”.

"...and now we have what some are reading as a suggestion that somebody knock off Osama — Obama. Well, both, if we could," Trotta said on Fox News during an interview about the presidential race.

"Talk about how you really feel," the surprised host responded.

Liberal commentators in the US have expressed fury at Trotta’s remarks, suggesting that if a left-wing media identity had jokingly suggested the assassination of George W. Bush they would be “interrogated by the secret service.”

The Fox News gaffe follows a storm whipped up by Obama’s Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, who cited the assassination of Bobby Kennedy when giving reasons for why she was staying in the race for her party's nomination.

Obama is considered at high risk of being assassinated because of his potential position as the first African-American president of the United States.

He has been under secret service protection for over a year.

It might be poor taste but it's still the truth. It may be that Obama has more chance of being shot at than he has of being elected President. And of course there would be an outcry if anyone said the same about George W Bush - he is the President - not just a candidate.

even though its still the truth, it still doesnt give the right for anyone to make remarks such as this.

Such comments are disgusting if referring to ANY candidate. It seems that there are forces of racism well alive in the United States of America. But not only in America! As a friend of mine from Hong Kong said to me the other day, "you are not like a lot of Australians'. I laughed and said,I can guess what you mean,"I am not a racist". Sadly, there are always human beings, who think because of the colour of their skin, that they are better than others.

Happy Little Gumnut, that's just plain stupid. Amazing what you get linked to from Google News these days. Live News in Australia, eh? Well, wherever you are in the world, there's no excuse for dumb. I'm looking at you Gumnut... If the Secret Service has managed to keep George W. Bush, the most unpopular US President ever, safe for all of these years, then I think they'll do just fine with Barack Obama. And he is more than likely going to be our next President.

Why i'm i NOT AT ALL surprised by this? Oh, wait, i forgot we still live on the same planet Martin Luther left. Isn't it amazing that he's from the two warring worlds yet he is STILL an issue???And you thought racism died!Welcome to 2008 people!!!

There is a nut in every basket, Liz Trotta and a few others are just trying to shake one loose. Why apologize for saying what you meant to say? You should hear some of the things that are being said on early morning TV, while everyone’s asleep. If Liz Trotta had indeed made the same crack about President Bush or any other President or candidate for that matter she would be talking with the secret service. Now wouldn’t it be great if every presidential candidate was held to the same standard as President Bush? The Democrats need to stop and take a good look at who made the suggestion/decision about changing the Michigan and Florida primary dates! If anyone has cheated the democratic voters in Florida and Michigan, my money is on the Republicans, let’s dig a little deeper and put everyone on a polygraph. The Gov of Florida should pay for the revote out of his salary. I can imagine it went something like this…. (You tell them their vote won’t count and apathy will keep them

If the Bush/Cheney 2004 campaign made any progress through "complaints about call for assassinations", they would have gotten elected by massive numbers! I see the Obama 2008 strategy: Cry racism, cry threats (that obviously are not serious... idiots at left wing blogs are calling for "investigations" like complete idiots!!!) , and call everyone who votes against Obama a neocon war mongering racist.... Screw Obama!!

Here we go again with the squeals of racist, racist, racist. And also "it may be the truth but you don't have the right to make remarks " about it. Politically correct BS. I have every right to express my opinion even when it doesn't correspond to yours. The cold, hard facts are that the USA has a bit of a history of shooting black men and political candidates. Go stick your head in the sand or somewhere else more appropriate and pretend there is no precedent.

2 words for Bill Jenkins of Chicago:GROW UP. In your last sentence, you sound like a 9 year old yelling"Homework sucks!"(I can guarantee you are not 9).Try exlaining why homework sucks,i'm sure you're exposed enough to see that Obama is a political issue worth discussing, which is why you contributed!Like it on not, people will ALWAYS judge you by the colour of your skin(on planet earth,at least). Those who want to pretend his 'blackness' (if i may)is irrelevant in his campaign can go right ahead.
