Opposition seizes on government divisions over FuelWatch

The petrol debate is again plaguing the Prime Minister, with the Coalition seizing on divisions over the FuelWatch scheme.

Last month, Energy Minister Martin Ferguson wrote a letter to his Labor colleagues opposing the plan, on the grounds that it could hurt the most ‘price-sensitive’ drivers in urban areas who are more likely to hunt around for a bargain under the existing pricing system.

This morning he has fallen into line and agreed to support FuelWatch.

But Shadow Treasurer Malcolm Turnbull says Mr Ferguson is an honest man and the letter proves the scheme won't benefit drivers.

“He demonstrates that the government’s decision to introduce FuelWatch is is just spin,” he claimed.

“It’s going to hurt Australian motorists, it’s going to cost taxpayers money, it’s going to work against the interests of Australians in western Sydney; Australians on lower incomes right around Australia.”

Independent MP Bob Katter stuck the boot into both sides of politics for not doing more to support ethanol, which he says is responsible for lower fuel prices in both Brazil and the US

“The answers are there, the hypocrisy is in there,” he said pointing into the House.

So this is the best the loser Libs can do? T And this after his toeing the party line a couple of weeks back over pretty much the same issue...Turdbull for PM .... I don't think so!!

Traci, by definition opposition has no power to initiate any policy. All they can do is nominate policy alternatives to Rudd's ineffective strategy. At the end of the day Rudd will take full responsibility of the failure as his govt has been vested with power to govern.

Nice call Traci. The Liberals at least ensured carers and pensioners got their bonuses which Dudd wanted to scrap. After ridiculing Nelson for suggesting a reduction in excise he now wants to remove the GST on petrol. In opposition, the Liberals have done more than Dudd has done in government. As usual your comment is lame and doesnot make sense. So far Rudd has given up on petrol, interest rates, pensioners, health and carers. Lucky is has only been 5 months.

Traci Fawcett, Melbourne, PM Rudd said he would, he has not. You are using another distraction.

“He demonstrates that the government’s decision to introduce FuelWatch is just spin,” - well isn't it? It was proven useless in WA and so they reintroduce it into NSW - sounds like a lot of bureacrats who can't make decisions doesn't it! Why doesn't the govt explore the viability of ethanol instead of investing into another useless independent body! I mean where does the buck stop in all of this surely people can't be that stupid to continually back this govt.

Dan, if the next Poll has Rudd at 70% then there is OBVIOUSLY something wong with the polls! Nelson won't poll high, but I'd be surprised if Rudd doesn't get a hammering?

Don - using Ethanol puts pressure on food prices now doesn't it!! For example the price of corn has skyrocketed because US farmers are selling it for Ethanol fuel instead of feeding people! I mean HELLO !?!??!?!

Posted by: Traci Fawcett, Melbourne

Tuesday, 27 May 2008

Traci:You obviously have not read my comments-it is not corn which is used and I made that clear-it's the rubbish left over in the fields-you know the stuff that you peel away from the actual corn that you EAT! You don't EAT that do you-there are rice fields which are required to be burned, grasses that grow wild-wood that is left in forests after storms it's all biofuel which can be used and abundant! Are you able to read and comprehend the difference between Cellulosic ethanol and just ethanol

It's a fact Don - food prices are going up for your greenie bollocks ! Oh well never mind the third world .... you can still do a a case of Krug right :-)

Traci: It tells me a lot when you get my name wrong, not once but twice, it tells me Traci you can't read nor can you digest anything-that's my point! bio-fuel is derived from recently dead plants biological material, most commonly plants and distinguishes it from fossil fuel, which is derived from long dead biological material. This is nothing new as humans have used biomass fuels in the form of solid biofuels for heating and cooking since the discovery of fire. However, the discovery and use of fossil fuels like coal, gas and oil, have reduced the amount of biomass fuel used in the developed world for transport, heat and power. The German inventor of the diesel engine (Rudolf Diesel) designed it to run on peanut oil, and Henry originally designed the Model T to run on hemp derived biofuel - I believe I covered this topic elsewhere.More waste can be turned into renewable fuels such as landfill gas, it escapes into the atmosphere: this is not desirable because methane is a greenhouse gas

And most of the senior liberal members think that Neslons idea is a bad one. Why is this man still running the Liberal party? And can someone tell him to stop using Bronwyn Bishops hair stylist, it's scaring the children.

I seriously can not wait until the next election!!! These die hard Lib supporters are as bad as their elected idols ..... and they are gonna get SMASHED into OBLIVION at the next election! Mark my words they will ..... and you know it don't matter what you say in these forums cause no one is listening to the Liberal party or it's dull blinkered supporters ... now or for the 10 years :-) It's over - find a new hobby :-)

Traci - if "no one is listening" then why are YOU contributing? I think "moron" is the word we are looking for! Go take a cold shower - there is NOTHING in your entry that contributes to the debate (typical of Ruddite supporters!).

Posted by: Gary Benson, Blacktown

Tuesday, 27 May 2008

Well Traci you are listening so thats not a bad start. As for the next election let me tell you Rudd would have run the economy into the ground by then. The old principle 'you cant fool all the people all the time' will come into play. Rudd and Swan will be completely out of spin and hot air and they will be ousted by the 'working families' that they would have ruined by then.

It's like 1996/97 - but this time it's the Lib's wandering around like zombies ..... why didn't the electorate love Howard and understand how good he was for the nation !!! *YAWN* Now we have the Nelson's, Turdbills, Bishops, Abbotts running around like a freak side show for the next god knows how many years ...... and the zombies will keep cheering on the next PM .... who will be Rudd .... sad as it is ... it will be RUDD so get over yourselves !!!!

Keep holding onto the faith young / has-been Liberals ...... and save up your cash for a case of Krug come say 2017 or 2020 .... and if you get bored there is alway the right ( it would have to be the right) hand to keep you occupied :-)

Traci, your provokative comments are not surprising. It's a sign of desparation that your master Rudd & Co is finally being shown their true colours & substance (or lack of). Indeed we can't wait for the next election & the rumour has Rudd not ruling out an early election by end of 2009! I personally will be at the polling booth doing my bit to put out this incompetent & hypocritical government. Rudd govt will then be swiped into the rubbish bin of history, being known as a govt of "spin".
