Some of Australia’s leading chefs have banded together to launch a campaign for genetically modified food to be clearly labelled.

Australian culinary doyen Stephanie Alexander, Quay Restaurant’s Peter Gilmore, The Verge’s Dallas Cuddy and dozens of others from across the country say chefs – and all Australians – have a right to know what they’re eating.

The campaign is being supported by Greenpeace who say GM food grown in Australia is due to enter our food supply this year.

GM canola is now being grown on Australian soil, and is set to enter thousands of common foods through canola oil and meal.

"It concerns me that this next generation of environmentally-aware consumers may not be able to enjoy GM-free food in the future," said Stephanie Alexander.

"At least it is imperative that any GM produce be so labelled."

Under existing Australian law, food containing GM products does not need to be labelled as such.
