Extra $6 million for NSW drought programs

30/05/2008 11:20:00 AM.  |
An additional $6 million will be spent by the NSW government to continue assistance for farmers still affected by the drought.

Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald says the funding will ensure ongoing assistance for transport subsidies and for small businesses still affected by drought.

Mr Macdonald said today there was only a 45 per cent to 50 per cent chance of average rainfall in drought-affected area in coming months.

This meant the transport subsidy would be continued until at least August, he said.

"Today's announcement ... will assist in the essential transport of livestock to and from agistment to sale or slaughter, and the transportation of fodder and water supplies," he said.

Latest drought figures show 48.4 per cent of the NSW is still in drought, while another 23.6 per cent is marginal.

Livestock industries are largely responsible for land degragation and forest clearing. Not only that, but it is the dairy industry mostly, and cattle, that are drying up the Murray Darling basin. Livestock are a disaster as an industry! We need to start cultivating more sustainable agricultural industries, especially our traditional reliance on dairy and meat exports. Our taste buds should not dominate our environment! Each kg of beef takes up to 16000 litres of water!
