Corby finds justice, Seven offers settlement

30/05/2008 7:51:00 PM.  | Daniel O'Leary
The Seven Network said today it had offered Mercedes Corby an out of court confidential settlement.

The offer was made after a jury found the network had defamed Ms Corby during a series of segments, which aired on its Today Tonight program.

In the program, Ms Corby’s former best friend Jody Power made various allegations, which the jury found could not be substantiated.

A jubilant Ms Corby left the court yesterday after the ruling.

Ms Power, who has not backed down from her claims, left the court notably distraught.

A stipulation of the agreement between the network and Ms Corby is that the settlement remains confidential.

"There will be no further statements as the terms of the settlement preclude either party making any further comment regarding that settlement," Seven said in a statement.

Ms Corby said the settlement would allow her to spend more time with her family including her convicted drug smuggler sister Schapelle, jailed in Bali, Ninemsn reported.

I'd be interested to hear Corby's legal team's reasoning behind declining a settlement, particularly when defamation charges are now capped and the laws encourage settlement outside of court. It's an interesting case for the media, that's for sure.

This whole thing has just made Mercedes Corby and her family look even worse than the public previously viewed her anyway so well done to Today Tonight. All those pictures that came out during the trial of her doing drugs just proves she is a druggie who doesn't deserve any more money to spend on drugs.

Its interesting isnt it? If Mercedes Corby isnt a dealer or smuggler - where was the MJ that was found in Schapelle's bag headed? where did it come from? I think the repercussions of the sydneys court finding may have a resounding effect in our Government & the Indonesian Judicial system yet.

The MJ found in Schapelles bag may have been planted in bali. If you don't think it was then how did the bali police know that finger printing the plastic and testing the MJ wouldn't support their case against Schapelle? Also John Smith are you a under cover Polli or journo, whos trying to influence public opinion? Mercedes won the case deal with it.

Jason: Do you actually know Mercedes and Shapelle Corby? or just one of their supporters-pity your empathy isn't actually given to the real victims who have been incarcerated in this country-the recent case of Roseanne Beckett!!-Are we to think that the Corby family are really so innocent? the break-in involving her brother was in inself damaging to Shapelle case-all done by her own family during a specific hearing to reduce her sentence or was that a set up also?

If I ever need a lawyer I know who to call. What a joke this whole saga has turned out to be. With the punch line being Mersaydeez ranting about "the truth" after her tainted victory! The girl has no shame but must be thrilled to have upheld her family tradition of denying the obvious. I only hope this ridiculous decision means we wont have to put up with the Corby's all over our screens again any time soon. It's about time the networks found something more wothwhile to report on.

It is a sad world we live in now. Look at O J simpson!! Money is the key. Look at this debarcle as it is also a circus act. Fair do to Sharpel for taking the rap, as her sister has kids to look after, as well as a business. Sleep well Mercedes.
