Rising fuel prices and housing costs have reignited the campaign for a very fast train network linking Sydney to Canberra and Melbourne.
Dale Budd was part of the consortium which won a Howard government tender for a very fast train a decade ago - the project never got off the ground.
Mr Budd has told 2GB’s Alan Jones high speed rail between our two biggest cities should be a foregone conclusion.
“People don’t believe this but it’s true, Sydney, Melbourne is the fourth busiest air route in the world…we are great travellers in Australia, so there is no doubt there’s a market, a demand for this sort of operation.”
The train line would allow people to travel from Sydney to Melbourne in three hours and to Canberra in about an hour.
Fraser government Transport Minister Peter Nixon also spoke to Mr Jones saying this could allow people to live in more affordable housing outside the major capitals.
“Along the route, people can work as they do in Japan, they work hundreds of kilometres out of Tokyo and go in everyday.”
