Brumby opens new Royal Women's Hospital

13/06/2008 5:45:00 PM.  |
Victorian Premier John Brumby has opened the new $250 million Royal Women's Hospital, amid allegations it is too small to cope with a booming population.

About 12,000 operations and 11,000 day procedures will be performed each year in the state of the art hospital, Mr Brumby said.

"The government is delivering quality health services for all Victorian families and the new Royal Women's Hospital will provide some of the world's best maternity services and facilities," he said.

But opposition leader Ted Baillieu says the hospital is too small and already out of date.

"It doesn't have the basics and when we are told the hospital design for a capacity of 6000 births a year, when last year the hospital had 6500, you have to wonder what is going on," Mr Baillieu said.

The hospital's first patients will be treated on June 22.
