GG Michael Jeffrey's claims pure arrogance: Republicans

14/06/2008 4:02:00 PM.  | Kelly Fedor
Republican’s have hit out at governor general major Michael Jeffrey’s claims that getting rid of the monarchy is risky.

Major Jeffrey is worried a popularly elected president could cause friction between the head of state and the prime minister.

Australian Republican Movement chairman Michael Keating said the claims were pure arrogance.

“Should we choose to have an elected person i’m sure the Australian who’s elected would be equally capable of doing the job as Michael Jeffrey,” Mr Keating said.

easy! just don't give the elected head of state any power, then there's no friction.

I think His excellency is proof as to why the current arrangement is so good. I suspect the next GG will be a counter example.

I can't stand these people that say the current system is perfect. The "if it ain't broke don't fix it" is a wonderful expression but it doesn't apply to this debate. The system is broke! I and the vast majority of the citizens of this country have absolutely no connection to England or the queen. Why then should I swear allegiance to her and the UK? Australia among countries that have fought for their independence from sovereigns is a joke! Time for Australia to get off its knees and stand proud.
