Greenpeace pair arrested in Tokyo

20/06/2008 1:46:00 PM.  |
Two Greenpeace activists have been arrested in Tokyo for allegedly stealing a box of whale meat.

31-year-old Junichi Sato and 41-year-old Toru Suzuki claim they took the meat to use as evidence of a smuggling operation by the crew of the Nisshin Maru after this year's hunt in the Southern Ocean.

And Greenpeace says the evidence resulted in a Japanese government investigation into the scandal.

Greenpeace protested against the arrests, saying that it obtained the whale meat as part of a legitimate investigation.

"Without taking such action, we couldn't have filed an accusation over the embezzlement of whale meat," Kazuo Hizumi, a lawyer for Greenpeace Japan, told reporters at the headquarters.

"The raids must not affect the investigation into the embezzlement accusation."

Greenpeace may have been too optimistic in thinking that justice will be served, and the Japanese police will do the right thing. I feel there is some kind of conspiracy or bribery going on behind the scenes involving the Japanese government, law enforcement, and the whaling industry. There's big money involved in whaling and someone is profitting from it. I wish someone would go after the bigger thieves (corrupt politicians) next time.

There is total corruption in this industry, so called "scientific research"! The Japanese should not be harming any wildlife in the Antarctic waters anyway! This is violating the Antarctic Treaty. By accepting their false claims and playing along their charade, our government/s are actually endorsing their criminal actions. Japanese are not allowed to talk about whaling when in Chile next month - there is a great cover-up going on. Nobody would worry really about "stealing" a little meat!

What's all the fuss about? The Japanese are just harvesting traditional food sources. I never see the Greenpeace activists protesting when Aboriginals hunt traditional food sources in the Northern Territory. How would we react if Japanese protesters decided to inflict illegal damage on an slaughterhouse in any rural area of Australia? If they want to eat rice and raw fish and whale then let them just as the Japanese respect my desire to eat beef, pork and lamb.
