No to Pope! Anti-World Youth Day movement launches campaign

A loose conglomerate of anti-Catholic groups has formally launched the NoToPope Coalition in Sydney today, in protest against next month’s World Youth Day.

A group ranging from gay rights activists to Raelians assembled on the steps of St Mary's Cathedral House to protest against the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI and 120,000 Catholics next month.

The NoToPope Coalition says the Catholic Church should be condemned - and not subsidised – for its stance on gay rights and AIDS prevention in Africa, among other issues.

“The Catholic Church throughout all the ages has held back humanity with their so-called ethics and morals,” said Eden Bates of the Raelian Movement, a religious group that believes in the significance of UFOs to spirituality.

“It wasn’t that long ago that they said women couldn’t vote, and women didn’t even have a soul! It wasn’t that long ago, can you imagine? And these days they’re saying being gay is a disease.”

Rachel Evans, a gay rights activist, says the group is worried the NSW Government’s support of World Youth Day indicates and encourages support of Catholic ideology.

“The ideas of the Cathloic Church and their bigotry in relation to same sex couples, that gives confidence to governments like the Australian government to continue with their campaign of banning same sex marriage and civil unions with ceremonies,” she told LIVENEWS.com.au.

“So we’re not happy that he’s here and we’re also not happy that we’re having to spend $130 million of taxpayers’ money on this as well.”

I have no problem with the event I just have a problem with the lack of tranportation and the fact I might not be able to get to and from work because they haven't put extra trains in. Their solution to that: Try to avoid the city, yeah handy for those of us who work there, boy do I hate that stupid ad.

The financial support of the NSW government is questioned by those affected through the continuing coverup of the extent of the clergy abuse crisis in this country.

Am I totally alone in my anger at the State Government sponsoring this event? Last time I looked, the Catholic Church had plenty of assets. Why are my tax dollars funding the Pope's Pedophile Picnic and not Public Private Partnerships. The money spent on this event could be put to much better use than giving our corrupt mafioso politicians a Get Out of Jail Free ticket at the big ballot box in the sky. Would they spend $130M on a Muslim Pilgrimage? Not likely. This is an outrage!

On SBS news tonight one of the 'No to Pope' speakers said that she was horrified that the church in Uganda was telling people that condoms don't stop AIDS. She should do her research - the church is telling the truth. HIV is smaller than the pores in the rubber of the condoms. Condoms cannot completely protect against HIV, they can only help. The church is encouraging people to abstain from sex with multiple partners - it's been more successful than the distribution of condoms in preventing HIV.

That is a flat out lie...the churchs opposition to condoms relates to the prevention of procreation. The church has a whole has said that condoms DO prevent HIV, but becasue they prevent life, the church will not advocate their use even within marriage. Like all organisations the church has its nutters as well who will do anything to promote "their cause" even LIE. In fact Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini has even broken ranks and supported the use of condoms (in marriage) to prevent HIV.

Hi Concerned Liberal, I'm not really concerned with the church's position on conception. Could you please tell me which part of what I said that you think is a lie? I was merely stating that the church happened to be right in stating that condoms don't stop HIV from spreading.

I don't have a problem with the religion or Youth Day what I don't like is the pedophiles within the system which are generally not exposed and let loose to abuse time and time again - the church hires high profile QC's to defend these criminals-not all priests or brothers are mongrels but there are some which spoil it for so many and make a mockery of the faith-Father Crocker was a hero but was silenced very quickly for exposing pederasts - the same which happens in govt dept's-google "broken rites" that will tell you a great deal - even lay teachers were a problem and covered up by the church including a well known high profile solicitor!

That well known high profile solicitor was NOT a pedofile, he was a gay man with enemies, don't believe all the crap you read. Many people hated him, but even they conceede he was NOT a pedofile.

I feel sorry for people that would turn away from a man as great as the Pope to further their own cause of anarchy and humanistic viewpoints. It is really quite sad. I will pray for those that attempt to persecute the Church and this event. May God have mercy on their souls. And, may he comfort them when a few million committed Catholic youth take over city and make them look rather foolish. My thoughts and prayers for the good people of the land down under! Most people are not against world youth day, what they are against is that NSW tax payers have to PAY for it. The church has plenty of money to fund this, and most of us are not Catholic, so why should we pay for it. What I really don't understand is why don't the Catholic population of NSW understand our concerns?

Why do people worship this old man with the funny hats? And-- why in the hell are us "infidels" paying for it with our taxes. That huge amount of money could do a lot of good on any one of the things wrong in NSW. Pick a problem, any problem. Oh, THIS JUST IN! - THE VATICAN HAS THE CONTRACT TO BUILD THE DESAL PLANT AND IT WILL BE PRODUCING NOTHING BUT HOLY WATER .

Cilla, Catholics don't worship the Pope and Anglicans don't worship the Queen. The Pope is the leader of over One Billion Catholics. As a Nothings you would only be led by the Dollar.

"Women don't have soul"?? I've been Catholic for a long time and that's a new one to me. The fact is we have a whole heap of vistors coming in from around the world and from both a Catholic and Australian front, I'd like to welcome them. I don't say, now or ever, that the administration of my Church is floorless - we are afterall made up of humans. That said, for every negative point raised about the Catholic Chruch I can raise 10 positives about the great work it does throughout the world.

Living in a secular based society, we should not be utilising public monies to conduct this mockery of an event. NOR should an event of this type be forced to disrupt the lives / businesses of the rest of society who do not share this particular religious denomination or any religious views. I welcome all and every peaceful form of protest against this event and hope that when the time comes, everyone votes these poor excuses for public representatives out.

As always with a big event, people will protest against it. I'm sorry to see though that these protests are not founded on actual reasons, but simply on private disagreements with the Pope. The only semi-good reason given is that the pope is against condoms, but even this is silly as research shows that condoms don't actually prevent HIV. I might have listened if the NoToPope people had provided some good reasons for their protest. But unfortunately this is only a personal gripe.

David, the vast majority of NSW taxpayers are NOT Catholic & many of us vehemently disagree with Catholic ideology, however, we respect your right to host such an event, & even cause some disruptions, but what we have a major problem with is having to pay massive amounts of money for the event. Our frustrations are compounded by the fact that the church IS one of the worlds richest organisations. NSW is falling apart & millions spent on this event could be better used. EG: On DOCS!

If you good people down there @ no to pope need a hand send me a mail I'm good to go - reasons are many but let’s limit it to the truth of life is that the single thing that is mind is my life and I will not succeed that to any other source of authority as in when I choose to create new life and when I choose to leave mine, yes that should be enough for everyone.

Perhaps B.Wesner can explain what the POPE has done to earn GREATNESS? other than heading a church who refuse to accept they need to address recompense to those they have abused? B.Clear, you state 1billion catholics in the world? If it be the case you can all donate $1.00 a piece for your show and the NSW gov. may actually be able to do something with the spare change? If your unaware, NSW gov. is baulking at computers in schools for kids, $250 mill. As a help for youth comp. do more than POPE

I fully object to the squandering of public resources on a 'God Squad" promotion. I am all for freedom of speech and if the Catholics, (or those who believe in the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy or magical Wizards) want to get together and rally - then go for it but don't expect public money to pay for it. Why is it ok for the Catholics to annoy me with their slogans and rhetoric but it is illegal for me to wear a T-Shirt expressing my belief?

People should be allowed to engage in peaceful protest but they should be aware that Catholicy is a voluntary organisation-no one has to follow its teachings if they don't want to. Please don’t try and make Secularism and Atheism compulsory. As far as funding the World Youth day is concerned, instead of insulting Catholics, take it up with the Government-mostly the NSW Government but Rudd has also chipped in. Governments have heaps of Public servants that can work out the costs and income from such an event. Ask them if there’s a profit or a loss.

This whole thing is ridiculous. Are we living in the dark ages? Christianity is utter rubbish. And catholicism would have to be the most stupid form of it. I find it incredible that so many people are willing to share this delusion. OPEN YOUR EYES! EDUCATE YOURSELVES! STOP LIVING IN FEAR AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR LIFE AND YOUR WORLD! GOD DOES NOT EXIST!!!!!

During the upcoming World Youth Day, the WHOLE WORLD WILL BE WATCHING. Australia must show once again that we are capable of hosting World events in the most efficient and peaceful manner. If there would be any disruption or protests from any group such as Gay Group, it will not be very good to our image, and our National Leaders should see to it that this will not happen. The Gay Group’s intention to hold a protest at the same time a Religious event is being held is MALICIOUS, SELFISH, CONTEMPTUOUS and CHILDISH. They’re just showing they’re DESPERATE and LACKING OF MATURITY OR INSIGHT. If they claim they have the rights, WHY PICK A WORLD EVENT? They could do their protest during Mardi Gras or at any other time! BUT NO, THEY SIMPLY WANT A FREE RIDE, FREE ADVERTISING of their abomination towards God’s law of order or their aberrant sexuality. How would they feel if the anti-gay or any religious group try and annoy participants, or stop their revolting behaviour or disrupt the sic

Hilter and the papacy The Federal Republic of Germany, Church Tax and the Hitler Concordat The case brought before the European Court of Human Rights by Dr. Peter Nittmann By Dr. Peter Gorenflos Since the downfall of the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War, the Church in Germany has begun to fancy itself as a once important force of resistance against Adolf Hitler. Thanks to his reserve, Pope Pius XII allegedly saved the lives of thousands of Jews. That must have been a strange form of opposition, an opposition that would decorate its meeting halls with flags bearing the Swastika on Hitler’s birthdays. That’s what German Christians did with their churches then! They had to wait a while before changing history because the relationship between the Church and Hitler, between the cross and the Swastika, remained very much in the common consciousness after the defeat of fascism. According to Karlheinz Deschner, it was a straightforward case of collaboration. (Mit Gott und de
