The Prime Minister has described the controversial Where the Bloody Hell Are You? tourism campaign as a rolled gold disaster.

Kevin Rudd says the advertising campaign failed to yield any significant benefits for the tourism industry, and the government is now looking at a different approach.

"That campaign, every place I have visited in the world, has been basically described as an absolute rolled gold disaster," Mr Rudd said.

The campaign showed bikini-clad model Lara Bingle uttering the now famous words, which led to it being banned or withdrawn in some countries.

The number of overseas tourists from the three countries that used the ad most, Japan, Germany and Britain dropped after its launch.

This is a good reason why the advertising industry should be paid on commision instead of just having many millions tossed to them.I fail to understand how hard it is to market OZ. Take some footage of things Tourists want to come here for and bingo. Yes some may want to see pretty ladies and all but most come here for the Visual vistas, not bikini clad women on far away sand spits!

Mr "20/20 hindsight" Rudd, said after the launch of the campaign that he thought it was good! When is someone going to hold this incompetent to account. He just talks, and talks and talks, and watches and watches and watches! Live News.....DO SOME RESEARCH! Don't just reproduce the crap the Rudd's office sends you.

Geoff, I (and many others would) fail to see what this has to do with any Government on this planet. They have Australian Tourism to blame, not any Prime Minister (current or former). If LIVENEWS.COM wants to find out where our Tourism dollars have gone over the past decade, look no further than the DRIVER/GUIDE situation. Workers on temporary Visas drive tourists around and show them the sights then go home again. The quality of tourism in Aust is shite, its a very sad and long story.

I saw the ad here in the US and thought it was clever and good- I've been to Oz before. I suspect the reason for the drop off was for other reasons besides the ad campaign. Besides, how many Japanese or German speakers could really understand what was trying to be said?

You are correct, it is due to other reasons than this advertisement. The quality of Tourism in Australia has been declining for about 14 years, since 1994. Overseas workers are showing tourists around (mostly from Asian countries) our wonderful cities and its a disgrace. They are not experiencing Australia from an Australians point of view. Guides that have never been here before are showing their groups around. Tourism Aust knows all about it but is too spineless to do anything about it.

yes, but its no use getting Garry from bankstown to show a pack of Japanese or Korean tourist around Sydney if he doesn't speak a word of their language. What do you want tourism Australia to do? Kids in your schools dont learn the languages of their neighbours? Australian's need to equip their young with the tools that will help them navigate their environment, that environment is Asia, whether aussies like it or not. Europeans learn their neighbors languages, why not aussies? are they not smart

David: Whilst you may be 100 percent correct in relation to the inept way tourism is presented by employing people who have no idea about this country instead of employing our own and that can only be attributed to the style of politics. Even though the Dept of Tourism is a statutory body it is still controlled by each state, regional and federally. In NSW whilst they may have their own Board (and which statutory body doesn't - the RBA has as well) and activities they are guided by the NSW Parliament under the Tourism NSW Act (1984). Labor has been in control here for 16 years and the decline as you mention appeared as far back as 1994 - there's your answer.Boards are elected by the govt of the day and the reason why these cannot be independent as people may be led to believe. The department of Tourism is still a govt dept and has the Minister to answer to.Geoff is right in saying it is connected with politics because it is!

Dat Phan: English is a universal language. If those who speak the language and don't know the area it's pointless - people don't need to see the wonders of this land - it's all visual in the end and pamplets, dvd's, cd's (I mean we do have technology don't we? - let someone translate it for those who cannot understand the language fully or for the visually impaired or disabled but there is no excuse anymore as the tourist can do their own research if these items are made available and if there's an issue of language and let them look it up for themselves if they are so interested. To employ people who have no idea about this country is a big mistake! I don't think we have ignorant people in this country and simple terms can be learnt to welcome tourists from every country - it doesn't mean that the guide has to speak all languages fluently. There are many bi-lingual people living here anyhow so what's the problem - isn't this a multi-cultural society! Imean how ridiculous does one have t

Dan, My comment drew precisely the reaction I wanted, a comment from overseas, namely Asian region. In 1994 it started, believe me, I know where and when and by who. It continues today because no Government has the gonads to stop it. It is wide spread ripping off of tourists from Asia and they have no idea because they do not know any different. There is a Duty Free shop in Pitt St that BANS everyone except Asian tourists. I walked in there and was asked to leave because 'this is an Asian shop'.

Dat Phan, There are plenty of good quality Australian Guides out there, unfortunately they are out of work because overseas workers come here for pittance. They take Passports from tourists so they have to shop where they are taken to. It has nothing to do with Language, I have seen overseas guides tell Japanese tourists not to speak to the driver because he 'does not want to speak with you, he hates Japanese people'....its brainwashing. This is why Tourism in Aust has gone to shite.

Before the election Mr Rudd thought it was a good (as Geoff of lane Cove suggests) and after the election its bad. Remember Peter Garratts "we'll change it after the election gaff" ? That was just Mr Rudd in Parliament trying to divert the attention away from Ms Neal and the sticky questions the Libs are asking about carbon trading effects on petrol price. We'll see a bit more of Rudds slippery tactics very soon when the going gets tough.

Mike...perhaps we'll see Rudd at his best when "Heiner" surfaces? Problem at the moment is that nobody is holding Ruddto account. Question time is a farce (Albanese is a disgrace), and the media are lazy.
