Rudd destroys national confidence in record time

I hate talking in negatives. And I hate people who dwell upon the negatives in order to justify themselves. But there's a poll out today and I have to say there can be no surprise.

After all, in the lead-up to the last Federal election, the Opposition strategy was virtually to take every policy of the Howard government and re-brand it as their own to prove that the Labor Party were economically conservative.

We heard that comment over and over again.

"Trust me, my name is Kevin," the Prime Minister said when he was elected, "and by the way I'm an economic conservative.

"In other words, I'm not going to do anything that's financially irresponsible."

In other words, Mr Rudd was well aware of the Howard government's record of sound economic management during its 11 years in power.

Yet once in power, Mr Rudd and Mr Swan have wasted no time in attacking the previous Government's economic record, calling them economic vandals who'd recklessly driven up interest rates, the highest inflation in history. And so, from the mantra of working families, we've received downward pressure on inflation rhetoric, every day.

The Reserve Bank has been given a blank cheque to do what it likes with interest rates. So we're going north while America goes south on interest rates.

As if Americans weren't using petrol or shopping at the supermarket or needing child care or buying houses or whatever.

Now one of the inevitable consequences of this doom-mongering was that the public would lose confidence, perhaps even in the government, as witnessed in the Gippsland by-election. But now we're told today that in the past six months the percentage of people who fear their living conditions will get worse has more than doubled. The biggest jump in the 23-year history of Newspoll's standard of living survey.

The percentage of those expecting an improvement has halved.

Now Brendan Nelson made the point recently that the introduction of Mr Rudd's carbon emissions trading scheme will make the GST look like nothing. That's what this poll suggests.

Fears about living standards for the next six months are worse than those experienced before the introduction of the GST in July 2000.

Now of course Mr Rudd created the expectation that he could do things a whole lot better, on petrol, groceries, interest rates, climate change, Work Choices. And by all of those barometers the new government has done infinitely worse.

And what did the Treasurer say yesterday? Fighting inflation required the government to be so determined and so tough. As if the whole world has to stand still to fight inflation.

In other words, you can't seemingly own a house and fight inflation. You can't keep your job and fight inflation. You can't spend and fight inflation.

It's impossible to imagine what has inspired anyone in Canberra to so terrify the electorate with everything they touch and say to the extent that the nation's confidence has completely dried up.

Confidence about their jobs, confidence about the cost of living, both of which are at their lowest since the recession of the 1990s.

The Australian newspaper tells us this morning in a Dennis Shanahan story, "Pessimism in the community at levels last seen two decades ago when Paul Keating warned that the nation could become a banana republic".

That we've got to this point in a matter of months is an absolute disgrace.

We are one of the richest nations on earth. We've got an economy the envy of the world. Six months ago we had unemployment so low it was almost zero. Industrial disputes at a level not seen for over 70 years. Interest rates were at levels that were unprecedentedly low.

And now, at the end of the first six months of a new government, the nation is plunged into this.

Mired in pessimism, when there is so much to be optimistic about.

Take petrol out of the equation and manage other things sensibly and we've got the world at our feet.

But a Government that seems to know so little that all it can talk about is inflation and working families.

Those who have given this nation this transfusion of pessimism and have sapped the nation's confidence have a lot to answer for.

Maybe Alan Jones would prefer to live in Zimbabawe? Talk it up mate we all know how badly the last government neglected the reserve bank warnings over interest rates and encouraged Australians to buy homes they can't afford. Give Rudd a go.

Howard stopped them before when they were trying to raise the rates too high but under Labor, hey they go to 19% before what's to stop them doing that again? What people don't seem to realise was our economy wasn't doing all that badly until Labor starting trying to talk it up which got everyone worried and thats when inflation really started to go up.

Good to see the media attempting to form public opinion once again and 'dictate' who runs the country. Alan, you have to be joking!

If our housing market was like the US Alan, then our interest rates would be heading south too. A teenager could see that. You should put a disclaimer after each article you write that you are a good friend of John Howard's, so everyone is aware of your bias.

Traci - On many occasions Alan gave Howard and Costello a serve for doing the wrong thing or doing nothing. Howard fronted up and took it on the chin from everybody - Jones, Charlton, Laws, Hadley take your pick. Rudd has never fronted Jones which shows what a spinless weak little man he is. His negative sound bites blaming everybody except himself is causing a problem and everybody seems to be waking up except Kev, his rusted on supporters and halfwits.

Phew! That's good news then! It was halfwits that kept Howard in for 11 years .. now they'll do the same for Rudd!

Gents Rudd has blamed everyone except himself after stating “I will end the Blame game” The only reason Rudd was elected is because young persons THOUGHT they were doing it hard under Howard. Well wait till carbon trading comes in and all the other Marx Bro’s ideas he has and then you will know what hard is.

Not all of us did or atleast I definately didn't. The thing that got Labor elected was preferences. Unfortunately alot of people I know voted for the greens not realising their votes went to Labor and then well unfortunately there were alot of young fools who went "I want a PM named Kevin" not realising he would fail them. I don't even think they have realised yet he has failed. Where is the education revolution? Where is job security? Where are better hospitals? WHERE IS ALL THE MONEY?

The Labor true believers are at it again-trying to have two bob each way. When the Newspoll comes out and gives Labor a strong showing and gives Rudd a high popularity rating they accept that as fine. Now when Newspoll comes out with a poll suggesting 20 year lows in people’s confidence in the economy they don't like it. Its no use blaming the previous Government because Rudd sold himself as someone that would do better-he has not delivered in terms of Public confidence.Shame, Shame.Shame.

What is it with you people???? I cannot stand Labor voters nor can I stand Liberal voters. Can't you people make up your own mind instead of listening to Jones, I for one stopped listening to this overpayed clown who apparently has the answer for everything?

Ivo K, Kogarah-So you dont like Labor and you dont like the Liberals-Bravo.Assuming that you vote then you probably have to go for the Greens or some other minor Party that has no relevance to reality-well done.

Wednesday, 02 July 2008

Des I did not say that i dont vote Liberal or Labor I have voted for both and will continue to do so. I just hate the people that treat this a sport and follow their "team" no matter how bad they are performing ie: the state Labor party.

Posted by: Ivo K, Kogarah

Wednesday, 02 July 2008

Ivo, let's stick with facts. The fact is Rudd has caused the slump in confidence of the public due to his inability to manage the economy and living cost, hence he is to be blamed. Nothing more, nothing less, and certainly nothing in this argument relates to either labor or liberal lovers or haters.

So obviously labor voters can never ask Rudd to start being accountable to the current mess! Rudd has so far done absolutely nothing of substance and continues to blame the previous govt for his incompetence. There is a major difference in the nature of inflation we have now compared with the inflation we had during Howard. The former is driven by high cost of living which Rudd has no ideas of solving while the latter was due to a booming economy. The quicker Rudd is expelled the better!

Posted by: W O, Turramurra

Wednesday, 02 July 2008

"Rudd has so far done absolutely nothing of substance" .... so therefore logic would have it WO that the current disastrous perilous position the country is in is all down to the previous government!! You, Alan & Johnny would make great bumbuddies!

Posted by: Traci Fawcett, Melbourne

Wednesday, 02 July 2008

Traci, your argument defies logic. The current mess is mainly caused by international developments (eg high oil prices, sub-prime mortgages, etc) which we do NOT blame Rudd for CAUSING these. However we DO blame Rudd for his inaction as he promised he would put downward pressure on inflation/interest/grocery prices. Hence my argument - he has done NOTHING substance to rectify these.

In 2001 when the rest of the world was heading in to recesssion, Howard & Costello LED Australia through at a time where the Chinese economy was 50% of what it is now. back then Labor said that the Liberals were lucky because of mining. Now we have more revenue than ever being generated from mining, yet RUDD and co are too inexperienced to know what to do - they dont have Howard to follow with "ME TOO". he had no answers before the election and certainly none now. Doom and Gloom - Rudd & Swan

Regardless of which party I had voted, I hate to see our PM and his team always shift the blame to previous government. Is previous government so bad that they leave a surplus to the country to go through tough times? Look, who started the welfare game? our ex (Labour) PM, Whitlam! So, PM, please be positive with the national issues and address them with your wisdom, not an inquiry any more.

I was not surprised that there are still so many folks follow the line which W Swan always uses - the last government neglected the reserve bank warnings over interest rates. I do think the only weapon that Reserve Bank can use is to raise or lower the interest rates. However, this is like steering a big ocean liner - you won't see the effect the next minute with a slight turn on the steering wheel, but it could be too late to adjust when the ocean liner deflected from its orginal course.

Rudd is NOT responsible for oil prices and subprime mortgages, but he IS responsible for his inaction about these issues. As these issues already existed before the election when he promised to "put downward pressure" on interest/inflation, etc, he is therefore accountable for the current mess. So cut the crap and stick with facts and logic.

Tuthmosis Trois-Yup,Yup,Yup-Rudd is guilty of having a mouth bigger than his ego and indicating that he could do better than the Coalition.Labor,Federal and State, have never been good at handling the economy and Rudd has already proved that he is one of the worst of a bad bunch.

The US is heading for recession (because of a conservative President & his cronies) Australia is in deep debt to the USA (thanx to Howard & his cronies). Was it not Howard & Costello that made it easier for people to fall into debt and was it not Howard & Costello that removed stringent credit approvals at behest of the USA? Kevin Rudd is not running the USA or 'Wall street'. As for China they are not producing because of the Olympic games.

Posted by: Sean Ambrose, Helensburgh

Thursday, 03 July 2008

Sean, Howard & Costello made it easy for people to fall into debt? Who signed the dotted line on the credit card statement - you or the govt? Your argument simply indicated a total lack of self discipline & irresponsibility which is common among lefties. Typical labor voters who simply refuse to take responsibility of their own action. As for debt, it was mainly due to import from China for discretionary items. To reduce debt u can buy Australian made at triple the price thanks to the unions.

To Tuthmosis Trois,of North Rocks ......... Glad there is a labor supporter out there who finally admitts Kevin Rudd is to blame for everything,,if I remember all of labor used to say John Howard was responsible for everything from not having any milk for there wheetie of a morning to the hole in the ozone layer,,why cant labor voters grow some shoulders and take a bit of criticism...you are all good at dishing it out but not good at taking it..

The most recent opinion polls indicated consumer confidence is at its lowest since the recession in 1991, and yet there are people who still claim that "confidence at last"! Man, just goes to show how prejudice can make people turn blind from the reality.

Posted by: Neil Mason, Sydney

Friday, 04 July 2008

Neil, good point - I only trust opinion polls when they truely reflects reality. With high living costs, high interest rate/inflation, and increasing unemployment, the opinion polls showing lower consumer confidence are consistent with the mess. Hence my acceptance. Trust this address adequately your comments.

Got you Tuthy..if I may. Dont you just love it when one interest rate rise in twelve, makes Kevin the engine of the lack of confidence. Dont you just love it when the Suits speculation on the oil price makes Kevin the engine of the lack confidence.Dont you just love it when ore prices are skyrocketing makes Kevin the engine of the lack of confidence. Dont you just love it oh never mind of course you dont.

Whatcha reckon Ramesses, wasnt it the AIM OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANK to dampen confidence by increasing interest rates.......then well done Reserve Bank or what do you say when these things work..maybe we should have a poll and ask the question do you approve of the Reserve Bank? Kevin should hang his head in shame that he didnt dampen confidence much much sooner even before he was PM.....Suuuuper Kev.
