The Rail Union won't rule out massive strike action during World Youth Day, which could throw the week-long event into chaos.
Sydneysiders have been told to use public transport during the festival, with widespread road closures throughout the CBD.
But that could now be thrown into disarray, with rail unions threatening to walk off the job within the next 30 days after wage negotiations with the NSW government fell through.
Nick Lewocki from the Transport Workers Union said the offer of a four per cent increase at the expense of 400 jobs isn’t good enough.
“I would much prefer [Transport Minister] John Watkins to come out and say he’ll look after rail workers,” Mr Lewocki said.
“He can solve this problem with the Premier.”
He says the Unions have been given no choice but to take this action, while the public will be told about any strike action seven working days before it’s carried out.
