Lleyton leads Olympic tennis team

4/07/2008 7:03:00 AM.  |
Lleyton Hewitt heads a line-up of eight Australians named for the Olympic tennis tournament in Beijing next month.

Hewitt was included on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) list of direct acceptances for the Games.

The 27-year-old's participation in Beijing depends on whether he needs surgery for a hip injury and, if so, when.

Any operation is likely to sideline him for up to two months.

Hewitt is the only Australian entry to the men's singles.

Compatriot Chris Guccione is the first alternate and could receive a spot if another player withdraws.

Guccione, 22, secured a place in the men's doubles with Hewitt, while Paul Hanley joins Jordan Kerr in Australia's other men's doubles team.

Samantha Stosur and Casey Dellacqua were included in the women's singles, as was 2004 bronze medallist Alicia Molik, who received a wildcard entry earlier this week.

Dellacqua will partner Molik in the doubles and Stosur will join Rennae Stubbs in the other women's doubles team.

A total of 56 players gained direct entry based on their singles rankings immediately after the recent French Open.

Six men and six women, including Molik, received ITF wildcards, despite not meeting the rankings criteria, in recognition of their records in team competitions such as Davis Cup and Fed Cup.

The Olympic tennis tournament starts on August 10.
