Miniature dachshund gnawed off owner's toe while she slept

10/07/2008 2:20:00 PM.  |
An American woman says her beloved miniature dachshund gnawed off her right big toe while she was asleep.

Linda Floyd said her beloved Roscoe has since been put down because of safety concerns.

The 56-year-old says she has no feeling in her toes because of nerve damage from diabetes. She discovered the toe missing after waking from a nap.

A vet said that because the toe had been bandaged due to an ingrowing nail, it may have somehow attracted the dog.

A friend of mine emailed me the link to the story about the mini dachshund that ate the toe of a woman while she was napping. I have to tell you, it is a very sad story and I'm sorry to hear about her toe, BUT, there was no needs for that dog to be put to sleep. Why didn't they just give this dog to someone that could handle the dog? It is a normal instinct for an animal that get the taste of blood to do exactly what he/she did. I would have taken that dog!!

I'm sorry this woman had her toe gnawed off, but to put the dog down is going too far. So much for her "beloved" Roscoe. You call putting your dog down LOVE?? I am an owner of miniature Dachshunds and they are a very sweet breed of dog. The fact that her toe was bandaged is the likely reason the dog was chewing on her foot . . . it was out of the ordinary and maybe he thought he was helping her. Was she COMATOSE or something that she didn't feel the chewing?? Hope she's proud of herself.

Big deal this happens all the time. Shit happens when animals aren't fed. The old lady probably forgot to feed the dog. I don't care.

Awwww, it's not the dog's fault, they are normally sweet dogs. He didn't know he was doing anything wrong. He should not have been put down. Yes, he was probably attracted to the bandage on her foot, and the smell of puss, etc attracted him to it. Simple solution--don't fall alseep around the dog and don't let him sleep in your bed any more!

If a dog bite is brought into a hospital, they are legally bound to report that dog to the police/animal control. If that dog has multiple bites reported, he is put down depending on the states requirements (some states it's two bites, some three). It's the law that put this dog down, not the owner.

OMG!.. the poor little dog...the dog was trying to help her out...the mother dog will always "lick and lick until the wound is clean..." it is totally this woman's fault that her little dog was put to sleep....the dog didn't just bite someone...she was probably so embarrassed; as a result she kills her own dog.....very sad!!
