On the brink of a new era: Key climate change report to be released

4/07/2008 12:00:00 PM.  | John Barrington
A blueprint for an emissions trading scheme that could drastically change the way households and industries manage climate change is about to be released.

In less than half an hour, Professor Ross Garnaut will present his draft report, detailing how the government can put a price on carbon emissions to reduce pollution.
Billions of dollars will be generated under the emissions trading scheme and leaked details of the report have highlighted the need for compensation.

Professor Garnaut will call for fifty per cent of revenue to go towards compensating families, but has suggested only thirty per cent go to industry to encourage green technology.

Food and petrol prices are expected to skyrocket, but Greenpeace CEO Steven Shallhorn says it's saving the environment that matters.

“The cost of not taking action on climate change is going to be far greater than taking action,” he said.

Decisions will be made by this Federal Government at OUR expense based on speculative and unproven science. Before this report, there has been, and no doubt will continue to be, an orchestrated scare-mongering campaign by the environmentalists to TRY and make people feel guilty about how they live their lives to justify sucking more money out of all of us. What a giant con this climate change/global warming garbage is. We live in a solar system. It is the Sun that determines what happens on the planet and there is bugger all we can do about it. How we live our lives has stuff all to do with any of it. So live your life to the fullest people and ignore the, ‘we the people are to blame for climate change/ global warming,’ garbage, well as best you can anyway, because we probably won’t have any money left to go anywhere and do anything.

I totally agree with you Phil A - this is the biggest con job since the election campaign last year! I fully intend to ignore any and all advice re "global warming". I'm old enough to remember when everyone had the hell scared out of them because of a coming ice-age!!!! Then there was the overpopulation thing.......oh, and don't forget the funniest ever - Y2K!!!! still laughing about that one.

'its the sun that determines what happens on the planet'?? its a little more complicated than that mate. at the moment solar activity is actually decreasing. so explain the increase in world temperatures. there is obviously natural weather fluctuations but scientists wiuld have taken that into account when formulating their conclusions. the waming of the planet can be measured, its happening. so how do you explain it. what is your theory and can you prove it?

The ETS is what we get now our Govs. have sold off everything that was a viable income earner for the States and Federal as a whole. Trevor, read the stuff A.Jones has on his column about warming. Then try Googeling "surviving 2012". After you have read that try some of the links to NASA and see what NON Propagandist science has to say on the issue. If that fails you ponder this Q. " if we are polluting our ozone to the point the sun cant reach us, how do we get warm"?

Why do these articles neer mention the 7 year weather patterns? (Sometimes its 14, 21, 28 and so on but still increments of 7) Because they want to scare people. It doesn't matter if we change our emissions because we have nothing compared to USA, China & India.
