'Pregnant man' gives birth to baby girl

4/07/2008 6:36:00 AM.  | AAP
A US man, who was born a woman before having a sex change, has reportedly given birth to a baby girl.

America's ABC news reports 34-year-old Thomas Beatie has given birth at a hospital in Bend, Oregon.

Beattie who is legally male decided to keep his female sex organs during chest reconstruction surgery and testosterone therapy.

Earlier this year he told Oprah Winfrey he feels it's not a male or female desire to have a child, but a human need.

Dubbed the ‘pregnant man’, Beatie got people talking when he appeared on Oprah sporting a beard and a bulging pregnant belly.

"To our neighbours, my wife, Nancy, and I don't appear in the least unusual," Beatie wrote in US gay magazine The Advocate.

"Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns."

Before Beatie and wife Nancy made their situation public, their doctor had refused to treat the couple, after consulting an ethics board.
