Unions wade into the climate change debate

4/07/2008 7:04:00 PM.  | Olivia Suzanski

Unions are warning that wages and jobs will be lost if Australia does not embrace an emissions trading scheme.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions has backed the draft Garnaut Report's findings, that inaction on climate change will cause job losses in tourism and agriculture.

ACTU president Sharan Burrow said a potential 15% cut in wages in some sectors, means industry needed to embrace carbon pricing to keep Australia competitive.

"If they sit outside, if they continue to not want to be part of the effort, then we'll lose those jobs because others around the word will be ahead of us with new technologies with world best standards," she said.

"We know everyone has to be invovled."

This is a disgrace, the Unions have obviously been bribed to back this BS, jobs will be lost by going along with this BS and living expenses will go up, even Garnaut admits this. All the states will back this as well, this is the problem with all Labor, Australia YOU asked for this. Carbon tax on fuel looks to be very possible. If you want clean energy why aren’t they talking about using more gas, E85 or other alternatives, instead they talk about punishing us.

So Miss Burrows has already read and digested the 50O plus pages, and has a degree in economics. Maybe she should be given Neal’s seat in Canberra. There will be huge unemployment, who will take economic risks Labor is proposing, and the significant overheads that will force many businesses all over the country to shut, or throw staff onto the streets. There will be a very large number of people going below the poverty line, with crime rampant and people marginalised and disenfranchised.

Andy Mac, Singapore, "digested the 50O plus pages" that’s a good point; I don’t think the best speed reader could digest that much BS. I think one on the comments was, "if we don’t commit/sign to climate change we will be behind the rest of the world in technology, such as Europe, and we will miss out" Why miss out? We can just adopt the technology from Europe which works with out committing economic suicide, what ever doesn’t work we can disregard. What’s the agenda? Besides totalitarian cont

Sharan Burrows has been sitting back doing stuff all whilst her "unions"trash Australian workers pay & conditions. The very fact that membership has declined so much proves this.If she backs anything then it is generally detrimental to Aussie workers. The current lot of unions could not possibly be so useless, so obviously one must suspect corruption.
