The Children’s Cancer Institute Australia is taking a different approach in the fight against cancer, offering a $500,000 grant to young creative scientists.

The idea of the program is to channel resources into younger scientific minds, which have not yet been moulded and shaped by the current system.

"Young researchers do it tough in my view," says philanthropist Neil Balnaves whose foundation is funding the prize.

"They're in an incredibly fiercely competitive environment where only the best ideas win - and some of the best ideas come when you're at the beginning of your career when it's hardest to have your voice heard.”

The CCIA’s Director, Professor Murray Norris, says the prize has tremendous potential for unlocking a cure.

"This is a very exciting opportunity for young researchers and potentially will provide fresh ideas which will help unlock key information about childhood cancer," he said.
