We are doing our best to save the Murray: Rudd

4/07/2008 12:40:00 PM.  | Jessica Campanaro
An historic plan to save the Murray Darling basin is the next best thing to rain, according to the Prime Minister.

Canberra and the States have agreed to hand control of the ailing river system to a national body and provide $4 billion to water efficiency projects.

Critics are calling for an immediate major water release into the lower Murray to save the drying river, but Kevin Rudd has told Adelaide radio, the COAG initiative is the best plan available.

“What this does is assist people in those communities through the $120 million piping project to obtain water from higher up the Murray…”

“This does not represent a complete or overall solution to the problem - dealing with this in six months, given our predecessors had 12 years to act, we’ve made a solid start, but I cannot make it rain.”

Too much irrigation water has been taken out of the Murray for too long. We have had it too good for many years, but with the drought, the demands of food production may be taking the life-blood away from a dying system. Our high dairy intake is the main problem, with milk, cheese and ice-creams that are a luxury in most countries. We need to get back to basic and sustainable foods such as grain crops.
