Mr Rudd addressed the media with South Australia's ailing Lower Lakes region behind him saying it was a clear example of the effects of global warming.

Mr Rudd told the gathering Australia could not afford to ignore the issue any longer.

He said said his government was committed to saving the vital river system.

"If you want to see an example of stress from climate change and where it could go over time then look at what's behind us here in terms of the Murray Darling system," he said.

I heard Half Nelson saying Rudd hadn't done enough for the Murray in his 7 months in office. What on Earth did the COALition do in 12 years, oh yeah, the got it to this stage. It's time Nelson stopped this politically expedient grandstanding and started saying what the COALition would do if it were in power. Oh that's right, they would just destroy the environment like they always do.

They did a lot more than Hawke and Keating did -and they had a longer period in office. It was the Bracks Labor Government that stalled the Coalition's effort.

Desmond Harris, I could say You're joking, but having seen so many of your posts I simply conclude that you're a joke. Howard-Costello and these idiots in the opposition have done nothing for the Murray except some posturing at the end of their tenure. They were booted for good reason, you noisy minorities are just annoyed because your desire to destroy the natural world is under threat.

Graeme Henderson-You are a left wing lunatic and you are not worthy of being called a joke-because jokes are useful they can brighten a persons life. The Coalition had a firm plan for the Murray Darling and it was only vindictive Labor Politics that stalled it. Any way we are still waiting for your list of environmental achievements of the Hawke/Keating era-after all Global Warming was first discussed twenty years ago.

The Murray is dying because of IGNORANT farming practices over the last 150 yrs odd!. Fertiliser and chemical run off has done it's share of harm, As well as the Huge Volumes of water pumped for the Cotton Industry. The fact that our governments over the years have only had their eyes on self gratification and inaction, is mute to the point of where it is now. Perhaps we should look at blowing the many locks on the river and let it flush itself out.To blame climate is absurdity.

Only rain will fix the Murray-Darling basin, not money. A decent amount of rain is predicted over that area in the coming days. If it does rain obviously it won't be enough. More follow up rain will be need shortly after and repeatedly. So let’s say it does rain over the coming weeks, months and years and the Murray-Darling is okay again in a relative short amount of time because of the amount of rain it has received. It wouldn't surprise me if this Government actually took credit for the rain, which of course they have nothing to do with, but that won’t stop them trying anyway.

Derek of Orange, the Farmers should be recieving the same fuel subsidy as the Mining and Exploration sector already. No matter how cheap the fuel is, with out rain, you can plow till the cows come home. No rain no grow!. The murray must be freed to clean itself out, perhaps this could be done when the rains are actually filling it up?

Let's just follow Alan Jones advice. Pump the excess water from the East Coast Rivers. There would be plenty of water for the irrigators, the wetlands and clean the inland rivers out. If there are heavy falls of rain inland then turn the taps off, to minimize the flow. But no. the pollies have to create Bureaucracies to waste money, time and destroy the economy.

Most people point their fingers at the cotton and rice industries, but figures would reveal that the real squanderers of irrigation water is our livestock industries and their fodder. Dairy is the most user of water, using nearly half of our irrigation water. While most people enjoy their milk, cheese and ice-creams, dairy exports are also heavily boosting our economy and taking our water! There should be a ban on dairy exports, the first irrigation cap! Dairy is unsustainable.

Could it be that our politicians have economic reasons to continue the rape of our country for export dollars? So much of our water is exported in agricultural products. For one of the driest countries in the world, we are basing our economy on inefficient products to export such as meat and dairy.
