Police are urging the public not to approach a gunman believed to be armed and on the run in Sydney's northern beaches.

Police are appealing for public assistance whilst hunting for a gunman who shot a man early this morning in Manly on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

About 5.15am, a 27-year-old man was wounded on his right upper arm in a residential unit near Darley Road.

The wounded man was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for surgery and is currently in a stable condition. Inquiries continue and a number of witnesses have been interviewed.

Police are appealing to anyone with information relating to the shooting to contact Manly Police.

Investigators want to contact a man who was spotted on Darley Road near The Corso shortly after the incident and who may be able to assist with inquiries into the shooting.

He is described as being of white European appearance, 25 to 30-years-old, 175-180cm tall, of medium to solid build, with brown hair, and a fair complexion.

At the time of the incident, the man was wearing blue clothing, including a blue hooded jumper.

Members of the public are advised not to approach the man.
