World Youth Day train strike stopped in its tracks

8/07/2008 3:35:00 PM.  | Richard Maxton

The train strike which threatened to de-rail World Youth Day is off, after an eleventh-hour agreement between the Government and unions.

The planned 24-hour strike next Thursday threatened to throw Sydney's public transport into chaos.

But unions have agreed to the Government's offer of a four per cent increase without the loss of 417 rail jobs.

Transport Minister John Watkins has told Philip Clark he is glad an agreement has been reached.

"The negotiations were done very positively and the government made very clear that we wouldn't reopen the negotiations under the threat of industrial action next week."

"That was taken of the table, we were therefore able to take off the table certain other things that were a sticking point and able to work out way through it."

Given what has now been paid to public servants in Canberra the rest of the country should now demand the same. If it is good enough for them, then its good enough for the rest of the country. Bring back Work Choices. Teh Labor movement are inept. Burrows has her nose on the trough at the expense of her members.
