An accused eBay fraudster has faced court after his alleged victims used cyber sleuthing to track him down and hand him over to police.
Chun Fai Tsang, 28. allegedly sold around $150,000 worth of goods through the internet auction site, but they were never delivered.
When Neil Moreton, a Melbourne IT worker, paid $350 for a Coles Myer gift voucher that was never delivered, he thought there must have been some mistake.
But when the eBay user he bought the voucher from deactivated their account, he realised he had been ripped off and decided to investigate the seller.
Mr Moreton's initial investigations of Tsang's eBay account turned up a fake name, Y. Wang, a phony address and a mobile phone number.
After setting up a Wiki site with all the details he had found, Moreton received a flood of information from other victims who were willing to help in Moreton online manhunt.
One victim even set up a meeting with Tsang, under the guise of collecting an item, in order to get Tsang's physical description and identify the car he was driving.
When Moreton finally handed over the victims' findings to police, he said they were amazed by how much they had collected.
"Just out of a lack of being able to do anything, I just made this Wiki[page] and put it around and people responded," he told News Ltd.
"The detective said he'd make me an honourary internet detective."
Gladesville police arrested Tsang when he reported to Chatswood police station last night. He was out on bail for another alleged offence at the time of his arrest.
At Horsby local court today, Tsang said nothing in the dock, only acknowledging his lawyer as he walked into the courtroom.
The court has been told Sung is on a visa, with prosecutors arguing he is a flight risk.
However bail has been granted with a $5000 surety and on the condition he surrenders his passport and lives with his uncle.
He is due to appear in court again on July 16.
