Two abducted men have woken to find themselves chained up in basement in Wisconsin, where they were allegedly sexually assaulted and tortured over several days.
According to an affidavit filed by sheriff's investigators, Edward Lanphear, 46, offered to drive a 23-year-old man home from a fireworks show on Friday night.
Soon after the 23-year-old got into the car, Lanphear pulled over where he allegedly told the man he was a police officer and handcuffed him
When one of the handcuffs came loose, Lanphear hit the man in the head, knocking him out, the document said.
The 23-year-old man awoke, he was chained up Lanphear's basement.
Lanphear attached a string to the trigger of a shotgun, which was then tied to the man's chains. He was allegedly told if he moved, the gun would shoot him.
Lanphear then allegedly cut the man's clothes off with a knife before sexually assaulting him at least three times while he was restrained.
A frantic search for the 23-year-old man was sparked after friend's reported him missing on Sunday. He had not been seen since he told friend's he was walking home from the Friday's fireworks show.
According to the document a 21-year-old man, who got drunk and passed out in his car on Sunday night, woke to find himself chained and hanging naked in Lanphear's garage.
The 21-year-old told authorities Lanphear bound his hands and blind folded him before hitting him with a metal pipe and sexually assaulting him.
On Tuesday evening the man somehow managed to escape, still wearing the chains, and fled to a house across the street.
At around 8pm on Tuesday the police were led to Lanphear's house after his neighbours reported a naked, bleeding man had turned up on their doorstep.
Officers found the 23-year-old still bound in Lanphear's basement. He was taken to hospital where he was treated for severe facial injuries.
The 21-year-old man identified his captor, saying Lanphear was a regular at the Wisconsin Rapids bar.
In court on Wednesday, Lanphear was held on a $1 million bond, but no formal charges have been filed.
His attorney, Gary Kryshak said Lanphear denied abducting the men, and questioned the young men's stories.
"These are nothing more than allegations that we dispute formally. They better have more than a couple of statements that they can't prove."
