Rudd maintains historic lead over Nelson

15/07/2008 7:10:00 AM.  | Yoni Bashan
The Prime Minister maintains an historic lead over his opposition rival Brendan Nelson who's taken another knock in the latest opinion polls.

Today’s Newspoll shows another slight drop in voter support for Dr Nelson, who has lost one point as preferred Prime Minister.

That leaves him on 14 per cent, which is light years away from Kevin Rudd who is more than 50 points in front, on 65 per cent.

The results follow a week of confusion within the Liberal ranks, with senior figures divided over the party’s emissions trading policy.

The opposition is also making barely any on the in roads on the two party comparisons - the results unchanged on 55 to 45 in Labor’s favour from a fortnight ago.

By Gum, Brengun is doing well isn't he? The 5c off petrol non-core promise has staved off a disaster and held his drop in popularity to a mere 1 point. And, the COALition is not too far below where it was at the last election. The flip flop policy on Climate Change is obviously a good move and their great economic record is having a lasting effect. Well done Brengun, you are at least twice as good as I thought you could be.

What do you mean historic?!?! It's been less than 12 months since the election! What the hell do you call history? oh I've been sitting in this chair for the past ten minutes, it must be historic!

Obviously Australians have not had enough of hardship and misery. So I invite you to keep supporting Rudd and "watch" (literally) the escalation of high living cost/unemployment/inflation, etc. It will be interesting to see at what pain threshhold Australians have before they break apart - perhaps there are not enough people losing their houses yet!

You couldn't be more right W O. The escalation of high living cost, inflation and housing is however a result of liberal policy. The labour government inherited all of these from their predecessors and I am sure they will fix it under Rudd's leadership (one at a time)

James Zhuo-Your faith in Rudd is admirable but unfortunately it is misplaced. If we look at the cost of living/inflation issues -a reasonable person will have to come to the conclusion that this is only going to get worse under Rudd because of his IR policies and his insistence on introducing an early Carbon Trading Scheme. This is only going to compound the growing problem of fuel prices. Things look bleak on the job front because of the lack of confidence displayed by business and consumers. So what specifically is Rudd going to do to overcome these problems?. They said that their budget would do the job-yeah pigs do fly.

Wiseacre Ordure, all your "We'll all be rooned" rubbish just doesn't wash. Most people are not as easily fooled as you hard line Liberal to the death idiots. Malcontent Spinbull has shown that he changes his position anything in the blink of an eye, Costello is on the nose for the more intelligent majority, we're not fooled by the spin, Bishop is a joke. Who can they get to lead the party, while Nelson is your best bet, he is hopeless. This is the Lib's problem, no leaders, just no hopers.

How many interest rate rises in consession under Howard? The rot started way before the current government was voted in. Lets face it no one wants Nelson but other than Turnbull the cupboard is bare and for the good of Australia it is important that we have an effective opposition. NSW would be in much better condition if this was so.

Rob Byrne-So if the vast majority are Rudd fans he must be doing everything right. Lets not hear any more about economic hardship with mortgage problems and cost of living issues etc.Rudd will watch the banks, the petrol companies and the supermarkets and we will all live happily ever after.
