A large number of Catholic pilgrims showing symptoms of influenza have been isolated, as health authorities work to prevent a major outbreak.
Eleven people have been diagnosed with the illness, while 32 others have been quarantined, at two housing sites, Oakhill College at Castle Hill and Sydney Olympic Park.
Doctor Jeremy McAnulty from New South Wales Health says preventing an outbreak among the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims is a top priority.
"In total 11 pilgrims are diagnosed confirmed with influenza at two sites...these two clusters of influenza seem unrelated."
In a statement Dr McAnulty said control measures had been put in place at the two sites.
"Medical teams and public health units from the Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health Service, Sydney West Area Health Service and NSW Health, along with Ambulance paramedics, are attending pilgrim residential sites on Old Northern Road in Castle Hill and at Sydney Olympic Park."
"The pilgrims are showing signs of influenza B."

Earlier today, NSW Ambulance chief executive Greg Rochford said they were also keeping an eye on three instances of gastroenteritis involving one or more pilgrims.
