Catholic Bishop says abuse victims are 'dwelling on old wounds'

16/07/2008 8:44:00 PM.  | Anil Lambert-Patel & Edwina Bartholomew

World Youth Day (WYD) has again been overshadowed by the Catholic Church's handling of sexual abuse cases, with Cardinal George Pell accused of holding up compensation claims, after a WYD coordinator said victims were “dwelling crankily… on old wounds".

Emma Foster committed suicide earlier this year – she battled with depression since she was raped by a Melbourne Catholic priest since she was in primary school.

Her sister Katie was also abused and the Foster family claim Cardinal George Pell stalled their compensation claim when he was Archbishop of Melbourne.

Outside a WYD service, Cardinal Pell has rejected the claims.

He says he apologised to the family in 1998 and organised counselling, which the Church partly paid for.

"We offered them some financial help. We also offered them counselling for Emma."

"Emma availed herself of that counselling for ten years and we contributed substantially towards those counselling costs."

He then left Melbourne in 2001, before the civil action was launched.

But he says he is saddened by her tragic death and is still sorry for what happened.

“My apology still stands,” he said.

“I repeat it. It has never been withdrawn.”

Cardinal Pell's statement comes after an Australian World Youth Day coordinator accused the sexual abuse victims of “dwelling crankily… on old wounds.”

Bishop Anthony Fisher was responding to questions about the report on ABC’s Lateline which featured Anthony Foster, and his daughters.

But today Bishop Fisher was dismissive.

"All I've seen is the reports in the newspapers today,” he told reporters this morning.

"Happily, I think most of Australia was enjoying [and] delighting in the beauty and goodness of these young people and the hope for us doing these sorts of things better in the future, as we saw last night, rather than dwelling crankily - as a few people are doing - on old wounds."

He went on to say Cardinal Pell and the Catholic Church were doing all they could to deal appropriately with sexual abuse claims.

"The cardinal has led in the church in this country in trying to put in better and better processes to deal for these things so that we get it right," he said.

"In the meantime, [we will] do all we can to prevent this happening again and to bring healing and justice to the victims."

But Advocates for Survivors of Child Abuse say they are highly disturbed by Bishop Fisher’s remarks.

"Emma [O’Donnell] was raped by a priest whose prolific child sex offences had been overlooked by the Catholic Church for decades," ASCA Director Michael Salter said in a statement.

"Emma spent many years battling depression, anorexia, self-harm and drug abuse before giving up hope.

"The grief of Emma’s family and friends is overwhelming."

Bishop Anthony Fisher we don't believe you for one minute, you are a disgrace like Pell hang your head in shame. WHY because of child sex offences that your men of the cloth refuse to believe it is happening. I would never leave a child in catholic care where these men roam freely.

Let's not forget one fact..... Sexual abuse is perpetrated by individuals; not institutions. As abhorrent as these low acts are is any other employer held responsible for the acts of its employees? I think not. Is the Education Dept held responsible for paedophile teachers? Or employers of those who go out and rape? So why is the Catholic Church being singled out? (rhetorical; I know the answer). The Church has done well to try to accommodate those who have been abused; and thier families.

David your right. But no employer would try so hard to hide it or deny it. Most people would hand over their mate or family member if they found out they were Pedophiling...As for all the rest. It is a police Issue to sort out, so let them sort it out.

Quote - "The cardinal has led in the church in this country in trying to put in better and better processes to deal for these things so that we get it right," -- hang on a minute, isn't the legal system there to deal with illegal activities like abuse? The only process anyone, including the church, should follow is to report abuse to the Police. Abuse should not have time to be swept under the pulpit and be forgotten

the bishop is right!they should ignore these whiners & wowsers & get onto converting the heathens that dwell 2 the north, in asia. lets face it sheeple, when r we gonna actively convert the buddas & hindoos who rely on their 5ooo year old anti-christ, non-evangelising filthy ideas. last year i attended a wedding of a close acquaintance (as far as i want 2 know 'em) that took part in a hindoo wedding ceremony that had been practised for at least five thousand years - outrageous!

You, Sarah Tach, are an idiot. There are no words to describe the disdain I have for you and your comment. I am not affiliated with any religion in particular, though I grew up Catholic, but the kind of hatred and intolerance (and not to mention idiocy) that you spew is what causes war and bickering amongst people. I cannot wait to see what your God has in store for you when you perish. If only that were sooner rather than later to save the rest of us the trouble of dealing with you.

To both parties to the dispute , you make valid points but everyone should let Australia and the world enjoy the WYD 2008 dont spoil the joy for so many! At the same time resolve to work assiduously and incessantly until the system gets it right Better to have satisfied people with positive outcomes rather than both unfinished business and resultant grief! So now we look forward with much joy to both the warmth and radiant smile Of Pope Benedict the inspiring leader of so many!

How dare those victims of sexual abuse by catholic preists dwell crankily on their misfortune. Why don't they just move on as the Catholic Church wants them to do. Surely it is time for the world to move on from religion. And to think our governments think it is appropiate to use millions of tax payers dollars to help fund a Catholic marketing roadshow in our city......what a disgrace.

I would never push my children into a religious up-bringing. Look at the way they handle themselves. Abuse is real, not made up, and should never be treated with contempt like this. Absolutely disgraceful. The Pope should be hanging his head in shame at this situation, as should Pell. Also, abuse is not for the church to investigate, it is a Police matter.

David, after spending 17 years working in public education I see you as a naive fool.

I may be a "naive fool" Robert Downs and after working for 17 years in public education no doubt you would view everybody as a "naive fool". That was a very worth while and reasoned addition to the debate; not! "I attack the messenger as I don't have the intelect to debate you". This being the same "public education" which abandoned the education of our children by stopping the teaching of the 3 R's and who are no banning any competitive sport, and who refuse to allow their schools to be rated?

We should all thank Bishop Fisher for articulating so honestly the church's position, which is that the fate of a few raped children, molested adults and unsavoury priests are of next to no consequence in the greater scheme of things, and cannot be allowed to spoil the lovely party they're all having in Sydney, recruiting a new batch of victims.

No doubt the Priests are rubbing their hands together, smiling with glee and thinking "Ah, fresh meat!" They should be put in prison for their crimes where they will, hopefully, be 'abused'. When they complain tell them to quit whining and move on with their life. That sounds like justice to me..........

Some of the Clergy in the various Churches have done the wrong thing-no doubt and the officials may not have handled things in the right manner, The Church does acknowledge the wrongdoing and is apologising and seeking to right the wrongs. In the past other organisations have done equally atrocious things to other humans like the treatment of Indigenous Australians for example. Why aren't the people up in arms against all Australians Governments for the atrocities like they seem to be against all members of Churches? Why is it that Rudd’s apology seems to have been accepted but not the Church’s ?. The critics of the Church seem to ignore all the good that the various denominations have done.

Des, just read your comment here and it got me thinking. A long time ago, in a class room far away, i dimmly remember a history lesson where the Aboriginal peoples of this land were placed on Missions. This was a Church organisation which did the placing and running of said missions. Twas also the Churches involved which ochestrated the removal of kids from so-called unfit mothers. Remember too that WAY back then an unfit mother could have just been a single mother. Which church? I cant remember?

I think Pell and Fisher are right with what they have said. Words have been blown out of all proportion. I retain my faith and am enjoying WYD as I see it and the pilgrims. Writing as a survivor of rape and child abuse, I think the church is doing a good job, and is open to more criticism than other bodies that aren't doing such a good job.

To the extent that the Church is still being led by a man who directed church officials to keep information from civil authorities about child molestation within the Church, I can't imagine how anyone can take apologies from the church seriously, what sort of moral leadership can he provide? Seriously.

So he tells people to get over the abuse then carries on about somebody who was "crucified" 2,000 years ago. Hmmm.

Once again the Catholic Church shows it's real self. It's Priests have a long history of sexually abusing children and the Church seemingly condons it. Why should Priests be above the law? If a man in your city molests or rapes a child he is arrested, charged with a crime, tried and (hopefully) convicted then sentenced to prison. The same should happen to Priests! Put them in prison where they'll be bent over and 'abused'! If they complain, ignore them like the Church ignores the child victims.

John Donovan - what a stupid thing to say that the church condons such vile acts. You are a bigoted idiot. The church, be it catholic, anglican, uniting is a vehicle that pedophiles have used over the years to get access to children. had the churches not been there they would have found another avenue to molest. To say the church is complicant is a lie and a disgrace. By your reasoning the Labor party condones the actions of Orkopolis, Collins, D'arcy and Wright.

In some respects, there is a greater crime than even the terrible crime of child abuse: covering up child abuse. The Catholics and their Church can apologize all they want for child abuse, but never will they even offer a small apology for the years and even decades of covering up this abuse--covering up which continues to this day. Does the abuse still continue? You can believe it does, if for no other reason than the covering up continues.

"Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest" - Denis Diderot This has never been more true for any organization as it is for the immense and rotting Catholic Church, grand whore supreme of all religious bureaucracies.

really, the bishop was only following Church policy.....just look up a document written in 1962 called "criminales solicitaciones". It provides a playbook of sorts to bishops on how to cover up for priests' abuses, what to tell families who've suffered abuse (swear them to secrecy), and threatens excommunication to any priests who "rats out" another priest to the police. This is all because they're concerned about what happens after they die, of course, and how their immortal soul will fare...
