Man shoots ex-wife in US shopping mall

17/07/2008 8:45:00 AM.  |
A man has shot and killed his-ex wife in a US shopping mall before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting occurred this afternoon inside Jamestown Mall, St Louis, no one else was injured but the mall was evacuated.

The motive for the shooting just outside a Sears store had not been determined, police spokeswoman Tracy Panus said.

The names of the dead have not been released, but Panus said the couple had been married more than 20 years before recently divorcing and have grown-up children. He was 49, she was 47.

Witness Marcus Gwynn said he heard four shots as he was walking into the mall to begin his shift at a Radio Shack store.

"I saw a lady on the ground face down, then he sits on the ground and shot himself in the head," said Gwynn, 21.

Detective Mike Williams said he inspected the female victim's car in the car park outside the mall and found two of the tyres had been deflated, leading him to believe the shooter did not want the woman to flee.

Earlier, a distraught man told two reporters he and the victims were cousins. But police later said the victims were a recently divorced couple.
