ABC journalist Peter Lloyd has been arrested in Singapore on drug charges, and could face serious punishment if convicted.
The 41-year-old ABC journalist will face court in Singapore today, and is one of six people who have been arrested following a drug sting in the country.
The Walkely Award-nominated reporter is accused of supplying a Singapore man with methamphetamine, and is currently speaking with the Australian High Commission.
If convicted Lloyd could face up to 20 years in jail and 15 strikes with the cane.
He's currently being offered consular assistance, with formal charges expected to be laid today.
Peter Lloyd joined the ABC in 1988 before moving to the UK when he worked for the BBC and British Sky News.
He then spent a decade in Australian commercial news and current affairs, working as a reporter/presenter, a program executive producer and North America Correspondent.
He returned to the ABC in 2000.
His reports on the Bali bombings and later the tsunami disaster earned several Walkely Award nominations.
The ABC has now issued the following statement:
"The ABC has been advised by the Dept of Foreign Affairs that Peter Lloyd, an ABC foreign correspondent, has been arrested in Singapore and is likely to be charged with drug-related offences.
"Peter was in Singapore on leave from his posting in New Delhi. The ABC has not been told the full details of the case, but we were aware that Peter had been undergoing hospital treatment in Singapore for a serious eye infection which he contracted while on leave.
"The ABC is in close contact with consular officials and is also taking steps to ensure Peter is given appropriate legal representation."
