Costello's future is up to him: Turnbull

20/07/2008 1:10:00 PM.  | Yoni Bashan

Questions are being raised about the future of Peter Costello, as rumours continue of a possible leadership tilt if he stays on in parliament.

The former treasurer is under pressure to make his intentions known following the resignation of another senior Howard-Government minister, Mark Vaile.

But Shadow Treasurer Malcolm Turnbull has told the ABC, whatever the decision, it is his to make, and his alone.

"This discussion is interesting, but in a way a bit pointless, this is a matter for Peter (Costello).

"Peter's got to make his own decision. I respect that and I respect his right to make that decision without being hectored or cajoled by his collegues on television."

Treasurer Wayne Swan has told Channel Ten anyone else considering retirement should do it now and it is up to the Opposition Leader to pull his backbench MP's into line.

"We've got all of those sitting round the back bench, like Peter Costello, thinking about going.

"Well they ought to all go at once and they ought to save the taxpayers some money.

"So it's about time Brendan Nelson put an end to this by-election farce that's going on."

Swan, is this your business - who are you to comment on liberal internal affair? This is not what you are paid to do. Oh yes, I know, it's because you have no idea how to perform the tasks you are paid and ask to do (ie managing the economy) Hence you will need to resort to these kinds of distraction so to pretend to the public that you are doing something whereas in fact are doing absolutely nothing!

WO. Weapons Of Mass Destraction. That is precisely what this is. Rudd used the Pope's visit to get the ETS of the front pages from scrutiny. You are right - this is absolutely nothing to do with Swan. I think Swan's job is more insecure than he would like us to believe. I still think Linsay Tanner will move in to Treasurer?

Hey Swan-With regards to the timing of a Members departure from Parliament does your Party have a policy of asking your Members to all leave at the same time if they were going to retire from Parliament?-your mob will lose an election one day you know. Talking about saving the taxpayers money how about concentrating on securing the economy now instead of all your bleating and airy fairy talk about the future. All your future talk has not impressed business and consumer sentiment.

This is "Opposition Watching". Add it to Grocery Watching, Petrol Watching, ChildCare Watching, and (maybe) Carbon Watching! Maybe, Swan should start "watching" his own back!

I think he should start watching the polls when the economy takes a nose dive, more people out of work and more/higher tax, carbon tax, more expensive medical insurance which will domino into more people in public hospitals meaning more hospitals beyond its limits, more nurses and doctors leaving more death, more illegal immigrants, higher petrol, higher grocery, higher cost of living, higher rent (because state gov tax the crap out of developers and land lords and land shortage). Inflation up.

HEHEHE Talk about a Labor one-legged stool, and calling the kettle black. Swan was dumped from politics last Labor fiasco and had to teach at the University in Brisbane before he unfortunately for us came out of the shadows in the abysse. Costello could eat Swan for breakfast. Swan is a scared Rabbit like Rudd, and the rabbit and dingo shooters have their spotlights in the Rudd Labor CRAP fiasco. SPIN SPIN SPIN and no action, just dehumanising the public.

And when Labor was in the wilderness, did the Howard Costello Government criticise Labor for keeping the opposition seats warm and raking in their big salaries and pensions. NO. They have more class than to bitch like old men, what a bunch. Just goes to show how poorly educated this mob are.

"Well they ought to go at once and they ought to save the taxpayers some money". Well Swany, if peter Costello doesn’t leave im sure your carbon tax rip off will make up for the tax payers money spent on Peter Costello. There isn’t much doubt Swany Rudd and Gillard are feeling a little insecure about Peter Costello not leaving. They know the day will come when their lack of vision and substance will crack up so wide Peter will just walk right through, they just hope he leaves b4 it happens

Considering Swanny's style and Peter Costello's performance in Parliament it may be a little uncomfortable for Swanny (still green in the job) to have the thought that Costello, with his long and successful experience as Treasurer, could still sit opposite and grill him as Shadow Treasurer .

typical of Labor. Not being content with having a country to try and Run, now they want to run the opposition as well. Message to labor, while your all frittering about moaning about the oposition, our Country is heading into a ditch. At least try to Concentrate on the Job at hand, which, Hello, is running the Country for OUR collective Good. Not your Multi- National brokerages! I notice One G.Henderson is yet to spray his spittle n this issee? His silence is deafening.

Peter Costello Australia needs you.I know it would be difficult to be a opposition leader after 11yrs of being the greatest treasurer in Aust but only YOU can show the true colours of our Spin & No Substance government.11yrs of the liberals hard work is quickly being destroyed by our new appointed Chamelon. Please Mr Costello save us from the devastation that is coming our way.First put MR RUDD & CO in their place & most of all the pathetic journalist that don't have a brain between them.PLEASE!
