More civilians have been killed in Afghanistan in incidents involving International forces, a highly sensitive issue for foreign troops there.
In the first incident, local police mistook Afghan and foreign troops for Taliban insurgents, and opened fire.
The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) admitted that at least four civilians were killed and four others wounded last night in Paktika province.
"The accident occurred last night in the Barmal district of Paktika when an ISAF unit fired two mortar rounds, which landed nearly one kilometre away from the intended target," an ISAF statement issued in Kabul said.
"Shortly afterwards wounded civilians presented themselves for treatment at an ISAF base, and a helicopter medical evacuation mission was immediately launched to assist," the statement added.
They say NATO-led forces also targeted and killed a high-level Taliban commander, Mullah Sheikh, and two of his followers in the south of the country.
A military spokesman said that two mortar shells had landed nearly a kilometer from their intended target.
