The Pope has met with victims of sex abuse by clergy just hours before flying out of Sydney following world youth day celebrations.

The four victims of sexual abuse and their supporters met with the Pope at St Mary’s cathedral house around 8am today, in private.

He listened to their stories and then went to mass with them.

He’s promised to continue to pray for them, their families and other victims – and assured them of his spiritual closeness to their pain.

A statement from the Vatican said the pontiff had held the meeting to again demonstrate his deep concern.

"As an expression of his ongoing pastoral concern for those who have been abused by members of the clergy, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI today celebrated Mass with a representative group of victims," the statement said.

"He listened to their stories and offered them consolation.

"Assuring them of his spiritual closeness, he promised to continue to pray for them, their families and all victims.

"Through this paternal gesture, the Holy Father wished to demonstrate again his deep concern for all those who have suffered sexual abuse."

It follows Pope Benedicts apology to all victims of sexual abuse on Saturday, during a service at St Mary’s cathedral.

But many victims are saying the apology doesn’t go far enough – and are demanding compensation.

In another thread there was yet another intelligent contribution from a "Rob C" of "Melbourne suggesting the Pope should "hit the road". This one is from a "Brenton Head" of "Hawthorn" which, for any visitors, is an inner suburb of Melbourne, which again for our visitors, is in another State, well south of Sydney and which did not have the benefit of a week long of huge crowds who needed no drugs or alcohol, and very little, if any, Police supervision. These "mexicans" are an intelligent bunch!

Dear David Ready, you are not very intelligent at all! I dont live in Hawthorn, Victoria. Nice suburb though , but my Hawthorn is far nicer. Sydney likes to have its circuses just like ancient Rome did! Sorry not everyone is into Popery. Now we just have the wonderful George Pell still gracing our shores! Sydney with Pell and not forgetting the radiant Jensen, absolutely fabulous!!!!!

For the benefit of our visitors there are only two Hawthorns in Australia, one in Victoria, and the other in South Australia, which is ever futher from Sydney than is Hawthorn, Victoria. Sigh!

Dear Brenton Head, I feel so SORRY for you. You obviously must have a miserable life who cannot see through the positive side of things.

Dear Maria, I feel so sorry for you and others worshipping 'Thin Air'. By the way, the name 'Maria' is a giveaway! You will obviously be off to 'World Stunt Week' in Spain in 2011 and boy will they need you to rock up with the amount of people leaving the church in that particular country. Viva Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero!!!!!

Having lived in Sydney, Hobart, Perth, Melbourne & now Wollongong I am pleased to report that every city has it's good and bad points! In reference to the comment of 'worshipping thin air' I'd encourage anyone who was curious (as I was!) to spend some time alongside of these worshippers. You may be surprised (as I was!) to discover that World Youth Day is not about stunts or Popery, it is about pointing people to truths that when applied transform hearts and nations.

Martin, I totally agree, all the happy young people that I met from Eastern Europe, Western Europe, South America, North America, Africa, Polynesia, New Guinea Highlands, Asia etc. all spoke the same language and all followed the same faith. Before the Catholic Missionaries arrived the ancestor of some of these people were eating each other. Pity those sitting at home in the gloom, missing out on the sunshine
