Police investigate Carney over late night antics

22/07/2008 5:43:00 PM.  | AAP
Canberra playmaker Todd Carney is being investigated by police for allegedly urinating on a member of the public inside a Canberra nightclub on Sunday evening.

Trouble-prone playmaker Carney and teammate Bronx Goodwin have been stood down indefinitely by the NRL club pending a police investigation.

The pair are assisting ACT police with their inquiries following an incident at a Canberra nightspot in the early hours of Monday morning.

ACT Police have confirmed they are investigating three separate incidents of assault, two involving a 24-year-old male outside the premises and the other a 22-year-old male earlier in the evening inside the premises.

The 24-year-old, believed to be Goodwin, is alleged to have assaulted two other men at 11.40pm on Sunday.

The 22-year-old, believed to be Carney, is under investigation for an assault which occurred earlier inside the premises.

It is understood a member of the public has made a complaint that Carney urinated on him inside All Bar Nun in Canberra.

Canberra officials would not confirm the allegations but earlier today said they would stand both players down pending the police investigation.

"We are going to stand both Bronx and Todd Carney down," Raiders chief executive Don Furner said today.

He would not comment on any possible terms in either player's contract that would see them face further disciplinary action if any misbehaviour was proved.

"It's just the best thing we should do at the moment until they (police) sort that out rather than have that hang over their heads while they're playing or picked," Furner said.

Asked how the trouble affected him, he said: "I just get more grey hair, that's all."

Carney has been in trouble before.

Last year the halfback was sentenced to 200 hours of community service and banned from driving until 2012 after pleading guilty to a string of driving offences on May 18.

He was immediately suspended by the Raiders and only returned to action six weeks later when he turned out for the club's Premier League side in a game against Newcastle.

Neither player was available for comment today.

Skipper Alan Tongue admitted the suspensions would disrupt the in-form Raiders.

"As a playing group we're just getting on with the footy," Tongue said.

If these two are found guilty they should be axed from the NRL, and not just for this season, what's left, but told to bugger off and earn a living the hard way. No more big bucks, no more fans, just hard slog, getting up early and using public transport. NO second chance for these dummies. ANYONE urinating on another person is revolting and should not be in the public eye where young kids can be influenced by them. Bet you it would be a BIG wakeup call for any more serial offenders.

What a shame it is to see Todd let himself down in this way. We all make mistakes, what he has to realise is that these incidents will follow him all through his career. Canberra has stood behind him in the past only because he has a lot of potenetial on the field. This time he needs to be sacked and be left to fend for himself and hopefully he might learn to grow up. Wake up Todd, realise your potential and give up the grog because it has done you no favours.
