Nelson struggles against Costello undercurrent

22/07/2008 7:27:00 PM.  |
Federal Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson has fended off suggestions he's under threat from former treasurer Peter Costello, who he says is a "loyal" supporter.

Amid renewed speculation over Dr Nelson's future, Liberal sources have been quoted as saying a plan to have Mr Costello take over the leadership is gaining traction within the party.

Concerned Liberals across both factions of the party have reportedly discussed Dr Nelson's standing in the polls, as well as options for alternative leaders.

Faced with a barrage of questions on the issue today, Dr Nelson refused to say whether he would consider standing aside for Mr Costello, while maintaining he is committed to leading the party to the next election.

"Well look, I am very committed to the job that I'm doing in leading the opposition and the alternative government of Australia. I'm not going to discuss hypotheticals," Dr Nelson told reporters.

"In my view, we've made considerable progress. Australians are waking up to Mr Rudd, that he is not the person who was featured in the brochure that Australians received in the mailbox last year.

"... I am very determined that I will lead the Liberal Party and the opposition to the next election."

Dr Nelson also suggested he was confident he had the support of Mr Costello, who has relegated himself to the backbench since the coalition lost office last November.

"He was an outstanding treasurer, he's worked very hard for the people of Higgins, and he has also been a very loyal and consistent supporter of me since I took on the leadership," Dr Nelson said.

Mr Costello has been under pressure to announce his intentions since rejecting the opposition leadership after the November election.

The retirement of former Howard government ministers Alexander Downer and Mark Vaile has placed him under further pressure to announce whether he intends to stay in parliament or quit politics.

Dr Nelson said the decision on staying in federal politics or not was one for Mr Costello to make.

But he also talked up the ex-treasurer's credentials, saying he would be happy if Mr Costello stayed.

"If Peter decides he is going to continue his political career, and serve the people of Higgins, and indeed the Liberal cause, I can assure you he will be on the frontbench with a bullet," Dr Nelson said.

"Peter Costello as you know has been a great servant of the people of Higgins and of Australia, and did a magnificent job as Australia's treasurer.

"I would be very happy for Peter to stay. He is by far and away the best performer that I've ever seen on the floor of the parliament in Canberra."

Mr Costello's office today refused to comment on the leadership speculation.

Weapons Of Mass Distraction from Rudd's spin machine. All sources quoted are un-named. The Labor party keep beating this up to cover up there own incompetence. Costello will be on the back benches until at least year's end. Get ove it. Live News you can do better than this.

Bolts, indeed labor is getting carried away in its distraction campaign to hide their incompetence! Who is running the country? They still think the ghosts of Howard, Costello, Nelson, etc are running the country! Obviously in their perception Rudd must be faring very badly as otherwise they would have started their propaganda machines to trumpet the positive news in their own government instead of dwelling in the past.

Poor Mr Costello, thought Australia would fall over if he was'nt there. Typical of an arrogant loudmouth. Can't he take the hint, he's not wanted.

Alex, time will tell whether Costello will stay on. The last time I checked most liberal MPs want him to lead the party. What you have said reveals a total lack of liberal politics. It's no wonder as a labor die-hard like yourself will only listen to labor brainwashing trash and nothing else.

On the contrary Alex, I actually believe Costello is NEEDED......BY BOTH PARTIES. We need a good economic manager and leader.

The only ones who DONT want Costello back in full swing are the Labor party, especially their bird brain treasurer, Swan. They live in fear of being shown up for the incompetents they really are. During the election Costello told us that the interest rates etc were due to internation and global influences but Rudd & Swan kept saying that that was a lie and they had all the answers. Well now their response is its Global or the other good one is "its the previous governments fault" .

Costello was to Howard what Keating was to Hawke. He'll go the same way Keating did!

Kevin - you mean that we'll have a Costello PM? I believe you're right, but it will evolve as and when the Liberals want it to. NOT WHEN RUDD'S SPIN MACHINE TRY AND MAKE IT AN ISSUE!

Costello we don't forget the mood you bring to our parliament, you supported Howards lies which means there is no room at the inn for you, try some solicitor office in Melbourne for a job because we can only hope you go and leave the wonderful Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to run the show.....

maybury, 'no room at the inn' I have heard that said to a great man before, but don't worry, the capable, competentent and cheeful Costello won't harass the poor struggling dour Swanny.

Maybury you silly old fool, what proven "lies" do you refer to? Or are you still quoting from the Rudd book of rhetoric? When it comes to lies, me thinks Wong will be shown to have misled the public over global warming to suit Rudd's obsession with destroying the Australian economy.

Runawaycrybaby Costello has shown how unsuitable he would be as a leader. Hell, his response to the election route proved him to weak to ever lead even a girl guides group. Leaders need to be braver than him. And Costello completely failed as a treasurer, he allowed inflation to get out of control under his stewardship, it was hidden only by the cheap imports from China that could never last. He is a fraud as an economist and a coward as a leader. But he is still the best option the Libs have???

Graeme, where were you during the past twelve years when Peter Costello was treasurer and the rest of Australia was prospering and enjoying historically low unemployment and low interest rates. Surely you have been able to improved your situation since the Keating government's demise.

Bob Rank, I was watching as Costello benefited from cheap Chinese imports and the brilliant economic policies of the Keating era. Costello was lucky but too stupid to capitalize on the fortuitous circumstances of his time. He was too intent on lining the pockets of the GREEDISGOODITES and failed to take any action to deal with the factors that showed inflation was rampant in the economy but masked by cheap imports. Costello is both a mug and a coward. Open your eyes.

"brilliant economic policies of the Keating era" = "the recession we had to have" and Rudd is heading down the same path!
