After being deliberately mysterious about the gender of his new sweetheart on Rove Live, Olympic hero Ian Thorpe, has spilt the beans to Woman’s Day.

But for his legion of gay fans, the news isn’t good.

After refusing to confirm the sex of the new love of his life on Rove’s show, Thorpe has now told the gossip mag that she is in, indeed, a woman.

"I am in a new relationship and I am very happy... except she lives on the other side of the world," Thorpe told Woman's Day.

"It's very cool, but we want to see how it goes. She's a friend of a friend and we were introduced.

"She has all the qualities that are most important to me."

Sorry, "his legion of gay fans" won't be disappointed, but only the media will be disappointed. Hard for the media to beat up a story when it is demonstrably untrue. But that won't stop you lazy journos. Instead of reporting on things that matter to humanity, you will beat up an easy celeb story, based on half truths, rumors and lies. Journos, to stupid to be low-life lawyers but grated from the same stock.

And yet you read the story. It was clearly a personal PR exercise from Thorpe, blatant self-promotion but it's obviously working with so many people reading it. You can't blame journos from running it when it's handed to them on a platter. Russell Jones, too stupid to realise the irony of deriding the newsworthiness of a story he's obviously been sucked into reading...or spell correctly.

Three things - 1) Who cares? 2) How does a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend, prove anything? 3) Who cares? Yesterday's hero - trying to get limelight prior to the Olympics....

Yesterday's hero? Problem is who will be Australia's next hero? We are seriously lacking in that department. Thorpe has done enough for this country! I doubt we will ver have another athlete who will do as much for Australian sport on the world stage.

Who care if he is gay or straight? He can do what he wants. Why is the gender of his partner even taking up news space? Why does it become a media story whether his love interest is male or female - I mean REALLY! Do you, the media think that we the unwashed masses don't have better things to think about. If he is happy that is great. He was a great sportsperson and represented the country at a very young age - let him live his life as he sees fit. Poor guy he has to put up with this crap.
