WYD pilgrims bashed, robbed in Sydney

22/07/2008 1:54:00 AM.  |

Two World Youth Day (WYD) pilgrims from Samoa have been bashed and robbed in an attack in Sydney, with one suffering a broken jaw.

The two men, aged 31 and 25, were attacked by a group of people as they walked down Dawn Fraser Drive, at Homebush Bay, early on Saturday, police said.

The assault occurred outside the Brewery Hotel at 1.30am (AEST) Saturday, with the group of four men and two women taking the younger man's backpack containing cash and a mobile phone.

Police say the 25-year-old suffered a fractured jaw and left eye socket, and other facial injuries.

The 31-year-old was able to escape the group with only bruising to his right eye.

The attack occurred in the hours before tens of thousands of WYD pilgrims from around the world set off on a nine kilometre trek through Sydney to Randwick Racecourse, ahead of a papal mass on Sunday.

The six attackers, all aged in their 20s, fled the scene in a late model Holden Rodeo.

Despite his injuries, the 25-year-old was able to make his way to Olympic Park railway station and catch a train to Lidcombe.

Police then took him to Auburn Hospital for treatment.

He is now in a stable condition, police said.

Police are conducting forensic examinations on items found at the scene of the attack and are looking at security footage from the Olympic Park precinct.
