For anyone wanting a mature, well-mannered companion as an addition to their family, for next week only, all seniors are on sale.
Dogs and cats that is.
To celebrate older pets, all RSPCA shelters will be offering a discount on senior dogs and cats from 28 July to 3 August. All dogs 8 years and over will cost $180, and cats only $80.
Older pets require less effort and time for training as they already have manners, and also settle into a new routine quicker than younger animals, the RSPCA says. They also require less exercise than a young, boisterous puppy.
Sue Patchett, from the RSPCA, hopes that people will look at more mature animals as an option when going to choose a pet.
"Many people look at the cute puppies and kittens, and simply overlook the older animals," says Patchett.
"By adopting an older pet you know exactly what you're getting in terms of size and behaviour. Older dogs are also over the naughty puppy stage, which means no chewing or digging."
