Former pregnant man shows off miracle baby

The world's first pregnant man Thomas Beatie has shown off the baby daughter he gave birth to three weeks ago after 40 hours of labour.

Beatie, 34, made cultural history as perhaps the first legally transgender male to give birth on June 28 to a baby girl named Susan Juliette. The baby was conceived via artificial insemination at a hospital in Bend, Oregon.

"Susan is a miracle. And we're finally the family we've been dreaming of," Beatie told People magazine in his first interview since the birth.

"She's so precious, I just can't stop staring at her," he said.

"She's easygoing and mellow and intelligent. Just holding her is the best feeling in the world."

The magazine said that both father and daughter came through the birth in perfect health.

"I weigh two pounds less than I did before I got pregnant," said Thomas. "And I don't have a single stretch mark!"

At home, the child rearing situation reflects the extraordinary circumstances of the parents.

Mother Nancy Beatie breastfeeds via induced lactation, a process using hormones and physical stimulation with a breast pump, while father Thomas keeps them company while watching TV.
