Paedophile who abused two generations to die in jail

24/07/2008 10:50:00 AM.  | AAP
A Melbourne grandfather who over half a century molested two generations of his own family and other children, including African refugees, has been jailed for 14 years.

Now 71, the man, who cannot be identified, abused his daughters, grandsons, nieces and nephews.

He also sexually abused three African refugees he took on church-based excursions.

The grandfather molested his first victim, a family friend, in 1957 and in the 1970s abused the victim's child.

The abuse, which included fondling children and performing oral sexual acts on them, ended last year when the man was arrested after being caught on video.

Sentencing the grandfather today, Victorian County Court judge Wendy Wilmoth said the man's conduct transgressed the fundamental rules of society.

"Clearly these are crimes of the upmost repugnance," Judge Wilmoth said.

"You have committed a gross breach of trust in offending against them as you did."

Confined to a wheelchair, the grandfather bowed his head and shook constantly throughout the sentence.

The court heard the man, who has recently undergone surgery for prostate and bladder cancer, will likely die during his nine-year minimum jail sentence.
